Abstract
The study of ;Af low sqmating from the surfaw of a solid body, md t,he dcterminatJion
of global changes iii the floTv ficltl that dcvclop as a rrsrllt of the SepiU&tiOr1;a rc Xnollg
the most firnclamenta,l and difficult problems of fluid dynamics. The phenomenon of
separation is often encountcretl in indmtrid and tngirwering applica,tions, snc>h2 ,s in
heat exchangers and flows over buildings and in geophysical prohlerns, e,g. flows Over
dunes and grooves. In order to fxilitate x bttcr iititl~rstxicling of the separation
process a,s a whole, the separation on a foru-aid fac*ing step in r2 straight channel was
investigatxd by esperimeiit~al and compi~tationill niethods.
In the expcrimcnkd part of the study, diffw~nr \-iswdisa,tion techniques were used
to reveal t,he lzkc structwc and dynamics of wpa,ratioii a,ncl to illustrate the flow
statm mtl flnsv bchaviow for low and rnodcrnre Reynolds numbers (Re-nuruhers).
The visua,lisa,tion indicates that there mist tn-o critical R,e-nurnhers which determine
the flow hehaviow. Below t,he first critical Re-nnmlw Rc\,,~?.~~c~ 65 (normalised
by the st,el) height /L and the mcm bnlk vciorit?- ‘G1):t ,he sepa,ra,tion is purely t,wo-

ity analysis. To facilitate such an analysis, an unstrlicturecl 2D base flow solver wvvs
