This is a complete, almost monumental, survey
of the present state of Old Testament studies.
In the traditional sense of an introduction, it
presents in systematic array every significant
facet of scholarship dealing with the canonical
books of the Old Testament.
The very extensive bibliographies—which
alone would justify owning this book—take in-
to account English as well as continental
sources. Foreign works available in English
translations are noted, thus extending the book’s
usefulness for students and researchers.
This book is a translation of the tenth edition
of an established German work which was
initiated in 1910 by Ernst Sellin. Dr. Georg
Fohrer has completely rewritten and expanded
the text, taking into account the vast amount
of new material that has come into the picture
in recent years. So extensive is the rewriting
that it represents virtually a new work, twice
the size of previous editions.

FOREWORD TO THE TENTH EDITION
In the year 1910, when the first edition of this Introduction to the Old Testa-
ment appeared, the author, Ernst Sellin, explained in his foreword why he had
written a short, concise textbook and what he conceived its advantages to be.
The work remained a short textbook through the seven editions that appeared
during Sellin’s lifetime and through the two following editions, which Leon-
hard Rost revised. Its content, however, underwent significant alterations, both
at the hands of Sellin, whose openness to change produced a succession of
varying theses, and also in the revisions made by Rost, whose last edition
“preserves only in scattered passages a text deriving from the seventh edition,
the last prepared by Sellin.” Rost once again intended basic changes for his tenth
edition. In order to devote his undivided attention to other plans, however, he
suggested that I prepare the new edition. In addition to my gratitude for the
confidence in me demonstrated by him and the publisher in turning this job
over to me, I also owe an explanation in detail for the far-reaching changes
made in the present book with respect to previous editions. I hope that the
presentation itself will, for the most part, provide its own explanation. It may
suffice to emphasize at this point that the greatly increased scope and different
organization of the whole work—to mention only the most striking changes—
were unavoidable if it was to do justice to the present state of Old Testament
studies and make a contribution to scholarship above and beyond mere elemen-
tary instruction. There was, nevertheless, much that had to be presented briefly
—perhaps too briefly for many readers—or merely alluded to if the book was
not to attain twice the size of the present volume.
The discussion is limited to the canonical books of the Old Testament. The
non¢anonical writings are not included, except for a mention of their titles at
the appropriate place. Leonhard Rost intends to treat them in a separate sup-
plementary volume.
I am grateful first of all to Frau Hildegard Hiersemann, who with inde-
fatigable perseverance wrote the manuscript from my dictation. I am also grate-
ful to Dr. Gunther Wanke, my assistant, and Hans Werner Hoffmann, stud.
theol., for reading the manuscript, preparing the lists of introductions, com-
mentaries, and abbreviations, making the indexes, assisting in the proofreading,
and many other kinds of help. .
I am grateful to the translator, Mr. David Green, for the care he has taken
to bring out my meaning and for the patience with which he has done a work
which was not easy. My thanks go likewise to the publishers for making this
book available in the American edition as a contribution to the further study
and teaching of the Old Testament.
