Preface
Oneofourgoals,asancienthistorians,istolessenthegapbetweenourexpe-
riencestodayandthoseofthepeopleoftheancientworld.Wewanttogetto
knowthesepeoplewholivedcenturiesagoandtounderstandthemasfellow
human beings. We want to understand their thoughts, beliefs, and feelings.
Wewanttounderstandtheirrelationships:husbandsandwives,parentsand
children,siblings,neighbors,friends,andenemies.Howdidtheyfeelasmem-
bersofacommunityandasmembersofagreaterworld?Howdidtheyrelateto
theirenvironmentandtotheirdivinities?
So, for example, what did it feel like to be an ancient Greek? Stephanie
Budinhaswrittenalivelyoverviewofwhatweknowabouttheintimatelives
of the ancient Greeks. Given the sources that have survived from ancient
Greece,shehasbeencreativeinheruseofvarioustypesofliteraryandarchaeo-
logicalevidencetoreconstructhowtheancientGreeksfeltandthoughtabout
themselvesandothers.Stephaniehassucceededremarkablywellandwhatfol-
lowsrepresentsamajorcontributiontoourthinkingaboutancientintimacy,a
contributionthatisfreeofscholarlyjargonbutbasedonscholarlyrigor.
Of all the people who helped bring this project to fruition, none deserves
morethanksthan SimonMason.Simonwasresponsibleforthefoundational
work that made this volume possible. He identified the major questions that
nonspecialistshaveaboutancientintimatelivesandconceptualizedameansto
