Health and Palliative Care
Public health approaches to palli at ive care have been growing in pol icy im port
ance and practice acceptance. This innova t ive volume ex plores the major con
cepts, practice examples, and practice guidelines for this new approach.
The goal of ‘comprehensive care’ – seamless support for patients as they
transition between homebased care and inpatient serv ices – relies on the prin
ciples of health pro mo tion and com mun ity de velopment to ensure ser vices are
both availa ble and im port antly appropriate for patients’ needs. In de veloping
con texts, where hosp itals and hospices may be ina ccess ible, a pub lic health
approach provides not only con tinu ity of care but greater access to good end of
life care. This book provides both an hist or ical and conceptual overview whilst
offering prac tical case examples from affluent and dev eloping con texts, in a
range of clinical settings. Finally, it draws together research based guidelines for
future practice.
Essential reading for pub lic health researchers and practitioners with an
inter est in end of life care and global health as well as those involved in
de veloping palli at ive care pro vi sion, International Perspectives on Public Health
and Palliative Care is the first volume to present an overview of theory and prac
tice in this emerging field.
