Preface
Because of technical and conceptual developments, interest in
research on human motor control, in particular the coordination of
limb movements, has increased tremendously in the past ten years.
This book is intended to help synthesize the rapidly expanding
knowledge base on interlimb coordination. It contains a set of intro-
ductory chapters written by leading experts in their respective areas
of specialization. The chapters take the reader on a journey that
starts with the description of the elementary networks and pathways
responsible for the production of rhythmic movements and evolves
into an analysis of highly complex forms of interlimb coordination
requiring tremendous amounts of practice. It is of interest to a broad
spectrum of graduate students and researchers educated in the neu-
rosciences, neurobiology, experimental and developmental psychol-
ogy, kinesiology, and physical therapy. It is particularly directed at
those students of motor control who wish to look beyond the borders
of their own area of specialization and to expand their background.
The chapters are predominantly introductory in nature to assist
readers who are not yet familiar with the various approaches to
interlimb coordination currently being explored. Contributions from
different subfields of science are discussed. These subfields represent
different levels of analysis. Accordingly, an interdisciplinary
approach is promoted. It becomes apparent that coordination
emerges as a result of a complex interplay between the central ner-
vous system, with its particular design features, and the biophysical
laws of nature that pertain to the movement of levers or limb seg-
ments in a gravitational field.
This book is divided into three major parts. The allocation of chap-
ters to these parts is not always straightforward, because some chap-
ters fit in all three. Chapter 1 intends to bring coherence to the
variety of approaches that characterize the study of interlimb coordina-
tion. In addition, it highlights the individual chapter contributions
against the background of past work and elucidates their innovative

features. Finally, it points to lines of convergence in the study of
interlimb coordination that cross the borders of the various subfields.
Chapters 2 through 13 deal with the neural basis of interlimb coordi-
nation: The first series is directed at locomotory behavior in animal
and human species; the second series focuses on upper-limb control.
Chapters 14 through 17 represent an introduction to the dynamical
approach to interlimb coordination. Chapters 18 through 28 predomi-
nantly focus on the modulation of coordination patterns through
development and learning. The enormous flexibility and adaptability
that even small children display as they grow older can only humble
roboticists who try to endow machines with these capabilities.

disconnected from my family for a long time, I wanted to be with
them again. I would like to thank my wife Lidy for taking over many
of the family responsibilities, and my children, Ruben, Evelyne, and
little Nathalie, for their patience and understanding in the face of fre-
quent neglect. Evidently, Nathalie did not need my help to make
