Florida Southern College is committed to educational excellence and
is a selective, comprehensive, private United Methodist college with
a strong liberal arts core and signature programs. The college enrolls
a talented student body and includes an accomplished faculty who
are dedicated to teaching excellence. Outstanding opportunities for
interdisciplinary learning, student-faculty collaborative research and
performance, service learning, study abroad, and honors study are
distinctive features of the academic program at Florida Southern.
The college offers exceptional student life programs, including a
championship athletic program.
It is my great pleasure to introduce the 2008 issue of the Florida Southern College
Interlachen. May this yearbook serve as a visible reminder of the classmates, faculty,
and staff who were a part of this special year, and may these pages hold for you a
lifetime of wonderful Florida Southern memories.
As Bethany Evans, a junior communication major from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, recently
said, “Florida Southern is a college really on the move.” This has been an exciting year
with restoration of the Frank Lloyd Wright Esplanades, the upper balconies of the Annie
Pfeiffer Chapel, and premiere of Mr. Wright’s Water Dome. We held our groundbreaking
ceremony for the Dr. Marcene H. and Robert E. Christoverson Humanities Building, the first
classroom building to be built on our campus in twenty years. In the spring, we celebrated
the completion of the first Barnett Residence Hall, offering students amazing lake-view
rooms and living spaces in the state-of-the-art facility designed by Robert A. M. Stern, one
of the greatest architects of our time, and construction on the second residence hall will
begin over the summer. In the coming months, construction will start on the Sarah D. and
L. Kirk McKay, Jr. Archives Center and the Joe K. and Alberta Blanton Nursing Building.
We continue to garner national recognition through our increased ranking in U.S. News
& World Report, where we are now ranked in the Top 5 “Best Baccalaureate Colleges in
the South,” our inclusion in The Princeton Review’s “366 Best Colleges” guide, and our
first-time inclusion in the Fiske Guide to Colleges. There is a great spirit of excitement on
campus as our talented students work with outstanding faculty members on a variety of
fascinating research projects and performances and as our community participates in a
full complement of social, athletic, spiritual, and academic activities that allow us to
achieve our mission of preparing students to make a consequential impact on society.
Outstanding student accomplishments are happening
throughout all academic departments and student life
– indeed the caliber of student talent, commitment
to service, and quality of student leadership is truly
extraordinary. I congratulate you and thank you for
making this community such a distinctive and special
place and for garnering important recognition for FSC
through your accomplishments.
FSC is indeed a college on the move, and I am very
glad that you were a part of this unique community.
I wish each of you great success and great blessings.

Time flies on the Florida Southern campus, spend it wisely! The Interlachen staff and I would like to
applaud everyone for completing another year at FSC. As we wrap up another year, we sit back and
wonder -- where did the time go?
It seems as if just yesterday I stepped into the Wellness Center gym as a freshman and went through
orientation. I think the photograph on my FSC ID can support my feelings at the time -- totally
overwhelmed and confused. Four amazing years have passed since that sunny August day, and the
number of memories I have captured is endless.
It is my pleasure as Editor-in-Chief to help capture your years at FSC on camera. As you flip the pages
of this book you will see the faces of your fellow classmates, professors and staff. These are the people
that define your years at Florida Southern.
A part of remembering this institution is reminiscing about the people who made the experience the
way it was. Whether it’s a group photo of your sisters, the academic club in which you were a member,
or the ACE event you attended -- we were there. Sporting our red shirts and spiffy equipment, we were
snapping shots and filming so that we could combine everything that took place on the campus as a
souvenir for you, to have forever.
Ultimately, we created this book for you, our fellow
classmates. We did it so that in 20 years, you can show
your children how good you looked! Well, that and so that
we can always remember each other. Whichever path our
lives take, we will always be united by Florida Southern
College, our alma mater.
Congratulations to the class of 2008!

3 When Dr. Kerr is around, you can’t
help but smile… must be the red suit.

Study Abroad
2007
FSC students have the unique opportunity to expand their knowledge and education overseas.
FSC offers various educational travel trips during the May Option that allows students to share
the study abroad experience together while creating memories that will last a lifetime. This
summer’s past trips included England, France, Spain, China, and Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
Each trip offers different courses, which allows a variety of students of different majors to attend.
The professors who teach the classes attempt to make them as revlent to the location in order to
better each students understanding of a different culture.
Not only do the students have the opportunity to learn more about the country and its culture, in
some of the trips such as the Spain, they live with a local host family for the duration of their stay.
Art students were given the opportunity to photography the beautiful sights of Australia. Fiji, and
New Zealand, while the business students who attended the China trip had an exclusive tour in the
local CNN offices and a breathtaking walk on the Wall of China. The historic castles in the suburbs
of London were turned into dorms for the English trip. And the students of the France trip spent
long nights in the city of light, Paris, under the Eiffel Tower.
Mat Hotho’s night photo of Sydney, Australia won first place in the Study Abroad Photo Contest.
