Interceptive Actions in Sport
When playing and watching sport, we have all been impressed by the ability of
athletes to co-ordinate their actions with respect to important objects and surfaces
in the environment. Interceptive actions are common to everyday life and many
sports. Examples include catching, hitting and striking stationary and moving
projectiles, as well as tackling sprinting players and running towards targets in
space. This book explores how these fascinating movements are performed.
It is the first book to offer a comprehensive review of current theoretical research
on interceptive actions, as well as demonstrating the connections between theory
and practice for a wide range of key sport skills. Contributions from experts all
over the world cover sports such as cricket, soccer, tennis, volleyball, golf, long
jumping and triple jumping.
Interceptive Actions in Sport offers a wealth of theoretical material, as well as
unique analysis of dynamic interceptive actions in practice. It will be essential
reading for anybody with an interest in motor control and skill acquisition, and
will be of interest to students and practitioners in sport psychology, movement
