Preface
We are delighted to introduce the proceedings of the 6th European Alliance for
Innovation(EAI)InternationalConferenceonInteractivityandGameCreation(ArtsIT
2017) and the Second International Conference on Design, Learning and Innovation
(DLI 2017), held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, October 30–31, 2017. This conference
broughttogetherresearchers,developers,andpractitionersfromaroundtheworldwho
are leveraging and developing modern IT technologies with strong ties to arts inter-
activity, game creation, design, learning, and innovation in their works.
The ArtsIT series of conferences has been created to provide a platform where
researchers and practitioners in the arts and humanities, who have a keen interest in
contemporary IT developments, meet with individuals working in the fields of com-
putational technologies and IT who, in turn, have strong ties to the fine arts and the
design disciplines in their output. With the extended call for papers including inter-
activity and game creation, the focus was widened to reflect trends in state-of-the art
whereby the art of interactivity and game creation is included to encourage
cross-fertilization between these related fields.
Design, learning, and innovation (DLI) frame the world of ICT, play and playful-
ness opening doors into an increasingly playful world. Whether it is about developing
tools,technologies,environments,aswellascontentandapproachesthatcansparkand
nurture a passion for learning and transforming domains such as education,
rehabilitation/therapy,workplaces,andculturalinstitutions,DLIisapowerfulcatalyst
inempoweringindividualstoparticipate,communicate,andcreatetobeabletoexceed
theirownlimitsinaplayfulway:SuchisthespiritdrivingtheDLIconference.Making
this spirit explicit and visible is crucial to identify how specific tools, technologies,
methodologies, and solutions shape opportunities for people to learn and engage with
the demands of life. Today, challenges in the fields of DLI are often approached by
transdisciplinary teams and solutions, such that tools, technologies, methods, and
theories developed for other purposes are mobilized to be utilized in unlocking new
frameworksfor understanding these fields and thereby openingup topartnerships that
can enrich learning in formal and informal learning practices. DLI intends to foster
such dynamics.
The technical program of the collocated conferences ArtsIT 2017 and DLI 2017
consisted of 52 full papers in oral presentation sessions during the main conferences
tracks. Aside from the high-quality technical paper presentations, the technical
program also featured three keynote speeches. The three keynote speakers were
Prof. Georgios N. Yannakakis from the University of Malta, Dr. Stavroula Zoi and
Manthos Santorinaios from Athens School of Fine Arts, Greece, and Prof. Eva
Brooks from Aalborg University, Denmark.
We strongly believe that the collocated conferences ArtsIT 2017 and DLI 2017
provided a good forum for all researchers, developers, and practitioners to discuss the
scienceandtechnologyaspectsthatarerelevanttointeractivity,gamecreation,design,

learning, and innovation. We also expect that the future ArtsIT and DLI conferences
will be as successful and stimulating as indicated by the contributions presented in
this volume.
