Preface
The Department of Applied Mechanics of the Royal Institution
of Engineers in the Netherlands (Koninklijk Instituut van
Ingenieurs) organised on April 2-4, 1990 the first National
Applied Mechanics Congress about the theme:
"Integration of Theory and Applications in Applied Mechanics"
The idea behind this initiative was to bring together the
Applied Mechanics communities in The Netherlands and Belgium
and to create an environment in which new developments in the
field could be discussed and in which connections to other
disciplines could be established. Among an extensive list of
possible subjects the following were selected as congress
topics:
- non-linear material behaviour,
- chaos,
- mechatronics,
- liquid-solid interactions,
- mathematics and applied mechanics,
- integration of Applied Mechanics and other
disciplines.
Applied Mechanics comprises both solid mechanics and fluid
mechanics. These can be subdivided further into: rheology,
plasticity, theory of plates and shells, theory of elasticity,
multibody dynamics, dynamics of continuous media, stability of
the elastic equilibrium, etc. Applied Mechanics is of
tremendous practical significance and it proves its value
almost daily in applications such as the calculation of the
strength and stiffness of constructions, like e.g. mechanical
structures, buildings, bridges, engines; the calculation of
the emission of acoustic energy radiated from loudspeakers or
machines; the analysis of the deformation of a video tape
across a recorder head in relation to the quality of the
recorded signal; the study of the flow of blood around a hart
valve or in arteries; the determination of the stability of
long and thin superconducting current conductors; the analysis
of the dynamical behaviour of the mechanical link in a control
loop; the determination of the stiffness and dynamics of a
lathe in order to study the ultimate accuracy that can be
reached in a mechanical workshop; the analysis of the dynamics
of a bogie in order to determine the stability of a railway
vehicle running at high speed. By these examples the theme of
the congress have been illustrated.
Applied Mechanics in The Netherlands has known a strong
tradition. This may be illustrated if we pick up the first
issue of "Advances in Applied Mechanics" edited by R. von
Mises and Th. von Karman in 1948 [1]. It contains two
interesting contributions of Dutch scientists:

J.M. Burgers, "A Mathematical Model Illustrating the
Theory of Turbulence".
Biezeno reviews a number of results obtained at the Laboratory
for Applied Mechanics of the Technische Hoogeschool Delft
(today Delft University of Technology) on elastic stability,
plates and shells, elastically supported beams, critical
speeds of rotating shafts, the elastic behaviour of a
"Bourdon" pressure cage, torsion of prismatric non-circular
members and experimental investigations on the reduced length
of twisted shafts with variable cross section, the strength
and stiffness of a twisted cross section weakened by a deep
keyway with sharp corners, the stresses in a ship propellor,
stress concentrations, effects of a change in cross section of
rotating shafts loaded in torsion and bending on fatigue
properties and vibratory phenomena. In the same paper Biezeno
also mentioned a number of publications by the Nederlansche
Centrale Organisatie voor Toegepast Natuurwetenschappelijk
Onderzoek (T.N.O.), the Hague, on photoelasticity, impact
loading, stress concentrations in corner joints and the
experimental investigation of stresses occuring in a tunnel,
projected between the banks of the "Noordzee Kanaal" , and by
the Nationaal Luchtvaart Laboratorium, Amsterdam, on
theoretical and experimental studies on aircraft structures
like wings, fuselage frames and shells.
Burgers presented in his paper a continuation of a
fundamentally new approach, which he introduced in the
theoritical study of turbulence. After him the subject
remained a central theme in Delft and has been recognized
internationally by the work of Hinze [2]. Burgers and his
successors therefore can be taken responsible for shaping
research on fluid dynamics at Delft University of Technology.
Presently, these activities take place in various faculties on
subjects like aeronautics, ship hydrodynamics, rheology,
multi-phase flows, transport phenomena and computational fluid
mechanics. It is the intention that this research will be
mustered in a research center for fluid dynamics with the
name: "J.M. Burgers center".
In 1953 an "Anniversary Volume on Applied Mechanics" [3] has
been issued, dedicated to C.B. Biezeno on the occasion of his
sixty-fifth birthday. Among several subjects special attention
has been devoted to the stability of the elastic equilibrium,
plasticity, vibrations, gas dynamics and fluid mechanics, the
stability of fast moving railway vehicles, the calculation of
the stiffness and strength of mechanical parts and cross
relations between mathematical physics and applied mechanics.
In 1972 on the occasion of the sixty-fifth birthday of A. van
der Neut an overview of contributions to the theory of
aircraft structures, mainly from universities and institutions
in The Netherlands has been published [4].
On the occasion of the sixty-fifth birthday of W.T. Koiter in
1979 a symposium on "Trends in Solid Mechanics" was organised

[5]. The number of speakers from abroad may underline the
important and internationally recognized position of Koiter in
the Applied Mechanics community. Special attention was spent
to the developments in the theory of plates and shells,
buckling, finite element methods, continuum-thermo-mechanics,
plasticity and on the construction of models of continua
interacting with an electromagnetic field.
It goes without saying that today the priorities have been
changed with respect to the publications mentioned earlier. In
particular the opportunities offered by the wide-spread use of
computers should be mentioned. We hope that the present
volume, which contains a choice of all papers presented at the
congress, may serve as a review of present-day research on
Applied Mechanics in The Netherlands. Thereby, we aim to prove
that the subject of Applied Mechanics is still a major
research area in Dutch universities, institutes and industry.
