Preface
Knowledge creation and technological experiences resulting from modern produc-
tion life cycles are definitely the most economical and important intellectual capitals
in the current manufacturing endeavors. These are together also the basis for ena-
bling industrial competition through managing and identifying organizational and
product related needs and opportunities; e.g. health care systems society needs clean
environment, sustainable production life cycles needs flexible approachable design
and engineering of materials whilst valuable materials are needed for renewable en-
ergies and the production of fuel-cells. These efforts requires conceptual modeling
techniques, integrating tools and the right managing knowledge, which can result
from human expertise based on experiences and human creativities. Integration of
components, design of structures and managing knowledge inherent in engineering
is a difficult and complex endeavor. A wide range of advanced technologies such as
smart materials and their approaches in alternative energy have to be invoked in
providing assistance for knowledge requirements ranging from acquisition, model-
ing, (re)using, retrieving, sharing, publishing and maintaining of knowledge. Inte-
gration, design and management with regards to Knowledge Management originate
at least on three roots.
Firstly, suppliers of new and existing technology and academics in this field
have developed and created opportunities of supporting knowledge tasks by sys-
tem solutions. Secondly, organization and human relations professionals have rec-
ognized the need for using the opportunities of a highly increasing educated work
force in modern societies. Finally, strategic management has recognized that the
optimal use of intellectual capabilities may be the best source for sustaining com-
petitiveness in the global economy.
Definitely it is clear that we will approach knowledge technologies for indus-
trial organization. However we need novel and sustainable methodologies to inte-
grate acquired human resource values and experiences beyond existing IT-tools
and most importantly we have to prepare new ways of sharing and transferring of
knowledge and technology. For this reason, we need interdisciplinary understand-
ing, which helps us to reach out for the next levels of innovation.
The annual International Joint Conference on Integrated Systems, Design and
Technology (ISDT), born from this vision, is a meeting with this conceptual ide-
ology based on integration of strategies for developing complex systems and char-
acterized by its multidimensional efforts, ideas and concepts to observe and handle
high complexities in different but interdisciplinary connected fields of application.

We intend to bring different researchers to share their knowledge and lab-
experiences to accomplish a technology matching for future societies to fill avail-
able "know-do" gaps. For this sake we have invited, met and gathered through the
years; distinguished researchers with the special intention to know about the close
requirements of technologies to expand together our horizons in the understanding
of the needs for knowledge transfer among our colleagues in the fields of Alter-
nate Energy, Composite Engineering, Micro-Electronics and Computational Intel-
ligence.
To strive towards these lines of vision this volume is composed of three sec-
tions building an interdisciplinary triangle of integrated systems, design and tech-
nology.

It is my sincere hope that this publication is a new step towards interdiscipli-
nary thinking, resulting in new works fueling the knowledge transfer in new tech-
