Preface
This book attempts to sketch out the possibilities of a psychology very different in character from the standard textbook one. It grew out of a sense, hardly unique to 
this investigator, of a pressing need for a "science of behavior" such as would do justice to the fullness of human life. More precisely, it grew out of a sense of need for 
a method that, rather than reducing human behavior to some lowest common denominator, would approach it on its own level of occurrence—a method that even 
now by and large remains unavailable and whose essentials remain to be worked out. The basic outlines sketched here form a phenomenological psychology. With 
phenomenology a method for disclosing "the things themselves" (in Husserl's words), phenomenological psychology is a method for disclosing "the psyche itself," 
human behavior in all its richness and variety, just as it shows itself to be on its own terms.
The present examination of the premises of a phenomenological psychology, then, is the working out of a method. The application of this method consists in clarifying 
psychological concepts at their source in experience. Just such a clarification, it is believed, is what mainstream psychology sorely lacks—the lack of conceptual clarity 
is no light matter, for it holds the danger of literally not knowing what one is talking about. By thus defining itself as a method for gaining clarified psychological 
concepts, a phenomenological psychology is a philosophical return to psychology's foundations, a reopening of questions regarded by many as closed once and for all.
A characteristic of the foundational phenomenological psychology undertaken in these pages, then, is its theoretical or philosophical status as a conceptual enterprise. 
Another characteristic is the systematic way in which it strives to embrace—in a preliminary manner, to be sure—the full range of human behavior, from perception to 
thinking, imagining, learning, remembering, feeling, interpreting, disposition, motivation, the unconscious. To the extent this book's systematic efforts attain a measure of 
clarity on basic issues, it is hoped that it may serve as a point of departure for further work, not excluding experimental research. The present study, the outcome of an 
eleven­year effort, is exactly a beginning—phenomenology always is.
This investigation places itself in efforts in the direction of a human­scientific psychology by drawing heavily on both classical Gestalt

theory, in particular the work of Wolfgang Köhler and Aron Gurwitsch, and on existential phenomenology, in particular the writings of Martin Heidegger and Maurice 
Merleau­Ponty. The book is an attempt at an interdisciplinary synthesis of these two major twentieth century traditions. Although existential phenomenology has much 
to gain from Gestalt psychology's notions of organization and Gestalt lawfulness, Gestalt psychology stands to gain perhaps even more from the nonobjectivistic 
philosophical orientation made available to it by existential thought. These two approaches thus complement and mutually enrich one another as they are brought to 
bear on one another on the topic that has gradually come to form the natural center of the present phenomenological psychology—"insight into value." Although certain 
portions of the work can be read as an introduction to existential phenomenology (especially Chapters 2 through 4), and others as an introduction to Gestalt 
psychology (especially Chapters 5 through 8), the most important thing is that it be read as the dialogue between the two traditions, in view of the service such a 
dialogue can render to the understanding of human behavior.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professors Calvin Schrag, whose 1978 NEH Summer Seminar played a decisive role in setting me on the path leading
