It was early in 1983, while visiting a friend in London, that I
was given a copy of The Gemstone File. Fascinated by its
revelations, I devoured the document in one sitting, unable to
put it down.
A few years later, while in Australia, I was given another
copy of The Gemstone File. "Here, take this, make another
photocopy of it, and pass it on," the person told me. I took their
copy (of a copy of a copy) and passed it on to someone else.
"Pass it on," I repeated, as many had before.
And now, after more than 20 years since the author, Bruce
Roberts, died on August 1, 1976, his manuscript has become
legendary. The Gemstone File is perhaps the world's best
known circulated document, one that is mentioned in dozens of
books on the Kennedy Assassination and the role of the Mafia
in the affairs of the United States and other countries
throughout the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.
The mysterious Bruce Roberts, as he claimed, was the
inventor of the synthetic ruby and was an expert in synthetic
jewels of many kinds. This sort of knowlege would seem to
lead one into a natural career as a costume jeweler,

particularly in Los Angeles, where Roberts resided for a time.
Few photographs are known of Roberts. One that was
discovered by Gemstone researcher Gerald A. Carroll, which
appeared in the Los Angeles Times in 1952, is of Roberts fitting
actress Carmen Miranda with synthetic jewelry.
Hughes Aerospace was located in Los Angeles as well. In the
late 40s and through the 50s, Roberts claimed that he was
employed by Hughes. He brought the technology for making
synthetic rubies-the basis for laser beam research, laser
bombs, etc.,-to Hughes Aircraft, where it was stolen because
of the optical quality of the rubies.
Later he moved to San Francisco and began writing his
"Gemstone Letters." These letters, sent with accompanying
synthetic rubies, were addressed to important people around
the world. Roberts hoped that these people would pay him
handsomely for the insider information that he passed on to
them.
Thus began The Gemstone File, a file of Robert's personal
letters of which he had kept copies. These letters ultimately
made it to Mae Brussell in Carmel, California. She
commissioned the Skeleton Key (a chronological outline of the
most important points of the letters) to be written, as the
number of handwritten pages that were given to Brussell is
said to have been well over a thousand. Parts of the file were
released to certain Americans beginning in 1969, and the
Skeleton Key began to be widely circulated underground in the
mid 70s.
The Gemstone File gives a very different tale of the lives of
Aristotle Onassis, Joseph Kennedy, Sr., Howard Hughes and
other famous figures than the mainstream media and official
biographers would have us believe. Where did Roberts get the
fantastic information contained in his letters?
According to the Skeleton Key, Roberts was married to the
daughter of the former French consul in Indochina, and, in
fact, the Golden Triangle area was a possible source for one of
the ingredients in his synthetic gemstones. In that area,
Onassis's involvements in the Golden Triangle dope trade was
