FOREWORD
This volume is a product of the International Network on Strategic Philanthropy
(INSP). Between 2001 and 2005, INSP functioned as a joint initiative of foundations
experts to explore the policy,leadership and management challenges facing philanthropy in
different parts of the world (see www.efc/insp.be).Specifically,INSP sought to establish a
peer exchange network ofknow-how and experience around a number ofcentral questions:
● What are best practices of strategic philanthropy,and how can they be identified?
● How can best practices and innovative approaches to foundation management be
disseminated?
● How can efforts of strategic philanthropy be sustained and achieve greater impact?
● How can professionalization ofphilanthropy be promoted,and how can know-how
and managerial competence be shared?
● How can new donors and forms of philanthropy be encouraged?
Soon participants realized that most research of philanthropy deals with organiza-
tions and institutions in developed market economies, in particular the United States.
Whereas studies have been carried out on philanthropy in Europe,Australia or Japan,we
know very little about the role,operations,and above all,the innovative potential of phi-
lanthropy in other part of the world.What are the philanthropic cultures and practices in
Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia, and how do they differ
cross-nationally,and in particular from the US and Western European experience? These
questions gave rise to the work in Part I of this volume.
Specifically,we commissioned a number of case studies from international experts to
address the following key questions:
● What innovations take place in different philanthropic cultures?
● What are best practices,and how can philanthropy achieve greater social change?
● Are there practices and models that are transferable from one culture of giving to
another?
Moreover, participants also realized that little is little is known about transnational
philanthropy,and above all,its distinct role in an era of globalization.This reasoning led
to the chapters included in Part II of this volume.The various contributions in that part
look at different aspects of transnational philanthropy and,through as series of case stud-
ies,examine the challenges and opportunities as well as strengths and weaknesses of phi-
lanthropy in relation to global problems and situations where local and international
philanthropic action becomes necessary.The case studies explore the strategic role for phi-
lanthropy as a global player,and ask:does philanthropy have a strategic,distinct role in
the globalization process, and where and how can it achieve greatest added value? How
can philanthropy approach solutions to global problems in innovative ways?

CONTRIBUTORS
Anheier, Helmut Helmut K. Anheier is Director of the Center for Civil Society at
UCLA’s School of Public Affairs, where he is also a full Professor of Public Policy
and Social Welfare. From 1998 to 2002 he was the founding director of Centre for
CivilSociety at the London School of Economics and Political Science,and a member of
LSE’s Department of Social Policy,where he now holds the title of Centennial Professor.
His work has focused on civil society, the nonprofit sector, philanthropy, organizational
studies,policy analysis and comparative methodology.His current research examines the
emergence of new organizational forms in global civil society,therole of foundations,and
methodological aspects of social science research on globalization.
Amott,Natasha Natasha Amott is currently based in New York City where she is Senior
Program Associate with the Structured Employment Economic Development
Corporation. Prior to that, Ms Amott was a consultant to the Ford Foundation and
Program Associate with the Southeast Asia department of the Synergos Institute.
Bonbright, David David Bonbright is the Founder and Chief Executive of Keystone,
a UK-based multi-constituency initiative that fosters accountability-based systems and
tools to enhance organizational quality and promote sustainable development. He has
over his career alternated between starting and leading civil society strengthening
organizations in the global south,and working with international development agencies,
such as Ford Foundation, Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, and the Aga Khan
Foundation.
Caruso, Giuseppe Giuseppe Caruso is a PhD candidate at the University of London,
School of Oriental and African Studies.His thesis is on “Conflict management and hege-
monic practices in the World Social Forum.” He has conducted extensive fieldwork at
WSFs in Porto Alegre in 2003 and 2005 and in Mumbai 2004.
Fraser, Dugan Dugan Fraser was born and lives in Johannesburg and has a Masters
degree in Sociology from the University of Witwatersrand. He works as a public and
development management consultant,providing research and advisory services for strate-
gic, programme and project planning, monitoring and evaluation and knowledge man-
agement.He is currently leading the research team working on South Africa’s African Peer
Review Mechanism process and consults to the Department of Public Service and
Administration.His current area of interest is participatory governance.
Kisil, Marcos Dr. Kisil is a well-known expert in private social investment in Latin
America having spent more than 15 years as Executive Director for Latin America at the
W.K.Kellogg Foundation.He is currently President of the Institute for the Development
of Social Investment, a leading institution in promoting philanthropy in Latin America,
as well as a professor at the University of São Paulo’s School of Public Health.Dr.Kisil
graduated with a Medical Degree from the University of São Paulo and received a PhD in
Public Administration from George Washington University (SGBA).
