Preface
The Asia InformationRetrievalSocieties Conference (AIRS) 2010was the sixth
conferenceintheAIRSseries,aimingtobringtogetherinternationalresearchers
and developers to exchange new ideas and the latest results in information re-
trieval. The scope of the conference encompassed the theory and practice of all
aspects of information retrieval in text, audio, image, video, and multimedia
data.
AIRS 2010 continued the conference series that grew from the Information
Retrievalwith Asian Languages(IRAL) workshopseries,started in1996.It has
become amature venuefor informationretrievalwork,finding supportfromthe
ACMSpecialInterestGrouponInformationRetrieval(SIGIR); the Association
for Computational Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing (ACLCLP);
ROCLING; and the Information Processing Society of Japan, Special Interest
GrouponInformationFundamentalsandAccessTechnologies(IPSJSIG-IFAT).
This year saw a sharp rise in the number of submissions over the previous
year. A total of 120 papers were submitted, representing work by academics
and practitioners not only from Asia, but also from Australia, Europe, North
America, etc. The high quality of the work made it difficult for the dedicated
programcommitteetodecidewhichpaperstofeatureattheconference.Through
adouble-blindreviewingprocess,26submissions(21%)wereacceptedasfulloral
papers and 31 (25%) were accepted as short posters.
Thesuccessofthisconferencewasonlypossiblewiththesupportofallofthe
authorswhosubmittedpapersforreview,theprogramcommitteememberswho
constructivelyassessedthesubmissions,andtheregisteredconferencedelegates.
We thank them for their support of this conference, and for their long-term
support of this Asian-centric venue for IR researchand development.
For a conference to run smoothly,much behind-the-scenes workis necessary,
most of which is largely unseen by the authors and delegates. We would like to
thankPreslavNakov,ourpublicationchair,whopainstakinglyworkedwitheach
individual paper’s authors to ensure formatting, spelling, diction, and grammar
werecompletelyerror-free.WethankLun-WeiKu,ourfinancechair,whoworked
hardtoreducetheconferenceregistrationrates.WealsothankChien-WenChen
and Yen-Chieh Huang, our two AIRS 2010 webmasters, whose timely actions
ensuredthat the website stayin sync with our programas it evolved.We would
