PREFACE
The publication presented herein is a list of 2,810 transla
tions generally published in India during the years 1947-1958.
A few translations published in U. S. S. R. and some published
in India prior to 1947 ha\'e also been included; but the number
of such translations is very limited.
The list is neither comprehensive nor selective; it is simply
a cumulation of entries for India in vols. 2-11 (there being no
entry for India in vol. 1) of 'Index Translationum' published
by Unesco, Paris. The object of cumulating is to spare the
readers the tedium of scrutinizing all the 10 volumes of the
'Index Translationum' individually to find out if a particular
work of a particular author has been translated into any langu
age of India and also to ascertain what translations there are in
the languages they are interested in.
As translations enrich the languages into which they arc
made, entries have been arranged in the alphabetical order of
the languages of the translations. Under each language the
arrangement is in the alphabetical order of the surnames of the
authors of the originals from which translations have been
made.
Each entry consists of the following parts :
(1) Author of the original-surname first;
(2) Title of the transiation followed in square brackets by
the language of the translation;
(3) Name of the translator-uninverted;
(4) Place of publication, name of the publishers, year of
publications;
(5) Number of pages, illustrations etc., price;
(6) Language and title of the original in italics.
Let us examine the following entry :-

The author of the original is Mulkraj Anand; it has been

translation is Marathi; the nan\e of the translator is Mange§
Padgavkar; it was published from Bombay by M/s. Kutub

At the end of each linguistic section there is an alphabeti
cal list of translators with reference's to the serial numbers of
entries in that section containing ihformation regarding the
works translated by'them. '
At the end of the volume there is a consolidated Author
Index in an S:llphabetical order with references to the serial
numbers of their respective in the different linguistic
work~

In the spelling of proper IJ.~mes the system ,adopted by the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ba~ been
followed for the transcription of Cyrillic characters (us~d in
Bulgarian, Byelorussian, Russian, Serbian, Ukrainian and other
languages).
The subject approach to the tranc;lations has been provtded
for in the Index to the rp.ain categ~>rie& of the Universal Deci
mal Classification System.
Two statistical tables--one showing the number .of entries
in the main categories of the Decjmal Classification
