Preface
This book is a first in the topic of in-situ burning for oil spill countermeasures. This
represents a significant update to the papers and guides on this topic. Much of this
material has not been published before and represents a significant advance in pro-
viding information on oil spill burning, especially in the field of emissions from
oil burning. All chapters in this collection have been reviewed by two reviewers.
The peer-reviewers are acknowledged here (in alphabetical order): Alan Allen,
Jeff Cantrell, Hamed Farahani, Ben Fieldhouse, Ala Hamdan, Kurt Hansen, Peter

Editor
Dr. Merv Fingas is a scientist working on oil and chemical spills. His specialities
include oil chemistry, spill dynamics and behaviour, spill treating agents, remote
sensing, spill tracking, in-situ burning, and the fate and behaviour of oil spills. He is
currently working on oil spill research in Western Canada. Dr. Fingas has a PhD in
environmental physics from McGill University, and three master’s degrees ( chemistry,
business and mathematics), all from University of Ottawa. He also has a bachelor of
science in chemistry from the University of Alberta and a bachelor of arts from Indiana
University. He has more than 900 papers and publications in the field. Fingas has pre-
pared nine books on spill topics; In-Situ Burning for Oil Spill Countermeasures is his
tenth. Dr. Fingas is also editor of some journals and serves on several editorial boards.
In the past he served as an editor of the Journal of Hazardous Materials. He has served
on four committees for the National Academy of Sciences of the United States on oil
spills including the ‘Oil in the Sea’. He is chair of several ASTM International and
inter-governmental committees on spill matters. He was the founding chairman of the
ASTM sub-committee on in-situ burning and chairman of oil spill treating agents and
another on oil spill detection and remote sensing, positions he holds today. He was
one of three scientists working with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) to examine the mass balances of the Gulf spill.
