PREFACE
The artist, Terry Miller, based his works on the Wilhelm/Baynes translation of
the l Ching (published in the Bollingen Series by Princeton University Press).
I have therefore quoted from this translation in an attempt to abbreviate or out
line some of the basic themes in each hexagram and to relate them to the appro
priate paintings without distorting the meaning of the original text. For this
purpose I have drawn key phrases and fragments from Book I and Book III and
correlated these on the pages opposite to each painting. Some additional words
about the illustrations appear at the bottom of each page. The quotations will
hopefully reveal some of the symbolic and metaphysical depths fundamental to
the paintings and also introduce the Book of Changes to those who do not yet
know it. I am indebted to Princeton University Press for their kind permission
to quote from The Wilhelm/Baynes translation, and I hope that this book of art
will serve as an inspirational companion to the l Ching.
