Riesce a incontrare i rappresentanti dell'entourage imperiale e ne raccoglie i racconti, acuti, commossi, involontariamente umoristici. Intervista gli uomini che stavano a Palazzo o avevano avuto il diritto di accedervi, con la funzione di servitori, cortigiani, funzionari, spie, camerieri di ogni sorta, ma anche testimoni acuti e smaliziati di intrighi, lotte di potere e abiezioni. Ne esce un ritratto insolito del Negus, educato a Cambridge ma deciso a conservare il rituale di bacio al piede e genuflessione, promotore di riforme economiche, morali e sociali che però di fatto preservano l'arcaica sostanza del suo impero, preda di deliri di grandezza e progresso per cui sperpera denaro in un paese che muore di fame. Un vecchio rabbioso, onnipotente e superbo, ma anche terrorizzato dall'idea delle congiure, che si circonda di ministri inetti, in una società gerarchica, primitiva e corrotta.
