Pompeo, incaricato di fermarlo, rispose con una mossa meno celebre ma altrettanto fatidica. Ordinò all’intera classe politica di abbandonare la città e di seguirlo, per contrattaccare dal meridione della Penisola o, addirittura, dai Balcani. Il panico fu inenarrabile. Mai i romani si erano trovati di fronte a una situazione del genere. L’Urbe, nella sua secolare storia, era stata sempre difesa, con alterne fortune, da nemici esterni e interni. A Cesare essa fu invece abbandonata, assieme al suo ricchissimo tesoro. Che cosa avvenne in quei terribili giorni? Come si giunse a una situazione tanto sconcertante? Roma era davvero indifendibile? Quali furono le conseguenze della fuga pompeiana? Per rispondere occorre ricostruire la temperie politica e istituzionale che aveva trasformato la gloriosa res publica in un sistema logoro e corrotto, nel quale ormai troppi non credevano più, e che Cesare riuscì a piegare con rapidità impressionante.
