Analysen des gebardensprachlichen Lexikons belegen hingegen ein hohes Ausmass an sprachlicher Ikonizitat. Es ist deshalb fraglich, ob ihr Status als Randphanomen vor allem an die Grenzen des lautsprachlich genutzten Mediums geknupft ist, und ob demgegenuber das visuell-gestische Medium einen begunstigenden Einfluss nimmt. Die vorliegende Untersuchung zur Rolle der Ikonizitat in Grammatik und Syntax der deutschen Gebardensprache (DGS) liefert neue Evidenz zur weiteren Aufklarung dieser Fragen. Die Analyse zeigt, dass der Ikonizitat gegenuber der Arbitraritat in Gebardensprachen eine mindestens gleichwertige Rolle zuzuweisen ist und dabei sowohl medienspezifische als auch fur Lautsprachen geltende Ikonizitatsprinzipien herrschen. Die Ergebnisse sprechen gegen die Betrachtung der Ikonizitat als sprachliches Randphanomen und fur ihre Berucksichtigung in der linguistischen Theoriebildung.
