Glovers and Related Ancestry

(The following is the data compiled by Fannie Jones Glover, but some of her data has
been proven to be in error. It is believed that Sarah Elizabeth Mason’s account is more
accurate.)
There were Glovers settled in Virginia by the middle of the seventeenth century.
It has been presumed that these Glovers were the descendants of Richard Glover who
,
emigrated to America on the Assurance July 4, 1635, and Mary Brook Glover as
Mary’ s will mentions a son, Richard, in America. Richard’ s father was most probably
named Robert and his mother Mary. The first Richard was one of three children bom
,
to Robert Glover a London Merchant that we know of: Richard, Elizabeth, and John.

The Virginia emigrant Richard is presumed to have settled in York County,
Virginia, and married Mary Brook near James River, Virginia. He had a number of
children, some remaining in Virginia while others went to Kentucky and the more
Southern and Western states. One son, Thomas, a scholar and writer of merit, resided in
Jamestown from 1664— 1667. Other children may have been Benjamin, Joseph,
William, Frederick, and Amy. We think William is our ancestor, but it is possible that
we stem from the Glovers who were in the Isle of Wight, Surry, and Sussex Counties in
Virginia about the turn of the century.
Further research is needed to establish the line conclusively, but the following
seems probable. There is no doubt as to our ancestry beginning with Frederick, b. 1740
and who was married to (1) Elizabeth Cato, and (2) Sarah Bean. Earlier ancestry is
probable because of similarity of names, places, and dates. (Winifred Glover Boone

Mary was the daughter of William and Lydia Norwood. (Will probated Surry
County, VA 7 March 1703)
William’s will was probated in August Court, Northhampton Co., NC, 1754. It
named children, Lydia, John, George, Joseph. Benjamin, Sarah and one granddaughter,
,
Caroline Young.
Mary named Frederick, grandson, as executor of her will. There were many
Glover-Norwood marriages in succeeding generations as the two families traveled
together from Virginia to North Carolina, to South Carolina to Alabama.

Lydia, daughter of William and Mary Norwood Glover, married a Harris. Their
daughter Mourning Harris married John Norwood, and their daughter Sarah Serena
Norwood married Allen Glover. There were probably other children.
In the 1750’s the names of these Glovers appear on the muster rolls for the
Granville County, NC militia. In 1764 the regiment commanded by Col. William Eaton
had a company under Capt. John Glover (97 men) which included among others:
William Glover, John Glover, Jr.; Joseph Glover all privates; and George Glover, Lt.
This generation most probably remained in NC, though by the time of the Revolution
they had scattered into other counties and a large group of them seemed to have moved
south to the Old Ninety-Sixth District of South Carolina.
V.. Benjamin Glover m. Elizabeth (Williamson?* )
Benjamin was the only son of William Glover to remain in Northampton County. He
must have lived on the Beaverpond Plantation which William Glover patented in 1722,
working with his father and managing the farm for him. Northampton County deed
books show no land purchases for Benjamin. No land grants were found for him. After
her husband’s death, Mary (Norwood) Glover made her home with this son.

Will in Northhampton County, NC, 1764, names only wife Elizabeth, but there
were apparently a number of children.
* “ There is no hint anywhere of Elizabeth’s maiden name. Could it be
Williamson? And Louis Williamson a witness to the will to protect her interests? The
Glovers have a penchant for using surnames as given names, and Williamson is used for
descendants in two lines from Benjamin Glover.

Since the abstract of Benjamin’s will, 1764, does not name issue, the above is
largely based on the similarity of names and dates. A search of NC records might
establish some descendants.

Very little is actually known about him. He was undoubtedly bom in North
Carolina, probably about 1740 as he must have been of legal age to administer his

grandmother’ s estate in 1763. He was twice married; first to Elizabeth Cato(?). One
daughter Olivia, was bom to them, and she married an English officer in the American
Army by the name of William Young. His second wife was Sarah Bean, daughter of

William Bean of North Carolina., and she was the mother of the other children. The
Beans evidently moved to SC with Frederick and Sarah. This was probably as early as
1772. (Deed from William Bean to Sarah and Frederick for 60 acres 13 July 1771).

This area of SC was a frontier outpost then, the site of numerous skirmishes with
Indians, Tories, and English regulars. By 1790 the region was populous enough to be

divided into several counties. The first census lists several families of Glovers, as well
as Harris, Wardlaws, Norwoods, and Porters, probably all closely related. It is probably

this Frederick who served in the SC Militia during the Revolution and on 18 July 1785,
received payment of 3 pounds, 11 shillings, 5 pence for his services. (Salley A.S., Stub

entries of endents issued in payment of claims against SC growing out of the
Revolution. Columbia, SC 1951 #642, Book U) At the same time John and Drewry
Glover received payment for their services.
In the first census 1790, Abbeville District SC, Frederick is listed as having in his
household besides himself:

Frederick’s eldest son, Benjamin, was in Wilkes County, GA, 1788-90 as his
name appears on deeds and transactions in Georgia. Benjamin’ s father-in-law John
Oliver, was living in Georgia at that time. Since no wife is mentioned in Frederick’s
will, Sarah must have died before 1797.
Frederick’s will is dated 31 Dec. 1796, proved 15 Sept. 1798, in Edgefield

Benjamin was the oldest son of Frederick Glover, though the birth date may be
wrong. He married Mary (Polly) Oliver, probably in Wilkes Co., GA. She was the

daughter of John Oliver who left a will dated 11 August 1796 in which he names his
I
daughter Polly Glover (Wilkes, Georgia Wills 1792-1801, 197). John Oliver’ s father
I
was Dianysius Oliver who married Mary Anne Winfrey. Dianysius’ father was Peter
Oliver who married Anne McCartie June 25, 1706. Peter’s father was John Oliver
1647. Anne’ s parents were Florence McCartie and Mary McCartie who died in 1717.
Benjamin and his father-in-law John Oliver purchased 1000 acres from John
Cargile of Wilkes Co. 19 March 1788 (Wilkes, CA D.B. “ EE” 1788-90, 29). In this
deed Benjamin is referred to as “ of Abbeville Co., SC” but he must have been in
Georgia when the first census was taken in 1790. Unfortunately, Georgia's first census

was burned and no record exists. Other Glovers, probably closely related to those in
t
western SC were in Wilkes and Elbert counties 1788.-96, separated only by the
**
Savannah River from those in the Ninety-Sixth District. Benjamin and his brother Allen
were in Abbeville when Bishop Asbury (Methodist) visited the region in 1814/5.
The two brothers, with other members of their family (possibly a group of 200
I
from the old 96th District of SC), migrated to central Alabama in 1818-19. Benjamin
died the next year of pneumonia in 1820 as he was a civil engineer and exposed to the
elements as he was surveying and laying out the township of Demopolis, Al. Since
there was no easy way of making a coffin, his slaves hollowed out a large live-oak tree
and made a resting place near his two story log cabin on the high chalk cliffs on the
banks of the Tombigbee River. He left no will but his estate was inventoried and settled
April 10, 1820. The appraisers were Nathaniel Norwood (who became guardian of the
younger son Benjamin, Jr.), Burton Chappell, Isaac Perkins, and Ludowick Moore.
Allen was a witness to the final settlement. Benjamin had established a plantation
called “ White Hall” near the present site of McKinley, and the graves of his wife and
son are there. Ben left no will but his estate was inventoried and settled 10 Apr., 1820
with the final settlement on 21 May 1821 (Marengo AL Wills A, 1). The estate was
settled by his wife Polly Glover and his son-in-law Samuel B. Shields. Appraisers were
Nathaniel Norwood (who became the guardian of his minor son Benjamin, Jr.), Burton

Chappell, Isaac C. Perkins and Ludowick Moore.
It is interesting to note that in the year 1819, the same year in which the Glovers
migrated from South Carolina to Alabama, the followers of Napoleon settled in the
Black Belt of Alabama also. Napoleon had sent scouts from France to America to find a
land suitable for the growth of grapes and olives, and the place they selected was called

Demopolis, named for Napoleon’s last battle. The French sailed from New Orleans up
the Tombigbee River and settled in log cabins— with all their fine furniture and court
manners— naturally enduring many hardships. The olive trees failed to grow well, but
the grapes thrived, so the people were at least able to make enough money to survive.
Later when the rich black land was cultivated, cotton and sugar cane were grown. Many
descendants of this first French colony still live around Demopolis, Mobile, and New
Orleans.
Mary (Oliver) Glover left a will dated 8 July 1820 (Marengo, AL Wills A, 204) in
which she names her sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was the daughter of John and Mourning Harris Norwood of Edgefield, SC.
At least one brother, Nathaniel Norwood, came to Marengo Co., AL, with her and a
niece Amanda Hughes, who married Benjamin Glover II.

She was from Winchester, VA and a niece of George Gaines. A sister, Rosa Lee
Diven married Benjamin Nash Glover of Marengo and evidently a kinsman of this
Glover line, though the relationship has not been established.
At the time of the migration from South Carolina, Allen Glover was delayed so
that his wife and children made the overland trip with other members of the family and
had established a rude home by the time he arrived. He dealt extensively in lands,
buying large tracts in Alabama and Mississippi, reaping a fortune from the resale. With
George Strother Gaines, the Indian factor for southwestern Alabama, he operated a
general store in Demopolis; Glover & Gaines. He was a Methodist and Bishop Asbury
visited his home in Abbeville near Calhoun Falls, SC in 1814 and again in 1815. He left
a will dividing his estate among his seven children and the surviving granddaughter,
daughter of the one child who predeceased him. But on the same day that the will was
signed, by deed of gift he disposed of most of his property. Lands with uncleared titles
were left for division by his executors: Williamson Allen Glover, Benjamin Nash
Glover (His brother-in-law) and Frances Strother Lyon (His son-in-law).

Williamson Allen was an extensive planter in Greene County where he built his
home, Rosemount, near Forkland, AL. After the Civil War, he lost his plantation, built a
smaller house, and moved his remaining family into the village of Forkland, where he

became a postmaster and operated a general store until his death. He became an

Episcopalian and was largely responsible for moving the small Gothic Church from Erie

to Forkland. He is buried in the family cemetery which lies between Rosemount and
Strawberry Hill. Dates are from his family Bible.
