Imaging Character Meanings
• Character 2 defines the body system (e.g., Heart
or Gastrointestinal system).
• Character 3 defines the type of imaging
procedure:
• Computerized Tomography (CT)
• Fluoroscopy
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
• Plain Radiography
• Ultrasonography
• Nuclear medicine procedures, PET, uptakes,
and scans are in the Nuclear Medicine Section.

Character Meanings
• Character 4 defines the body part with different
values for each body system.
• Character 5 specifies whether the contrast material
used is High or Low Osmolar, when applicable.
• Character 6 (Qualifier) provides further detail of the
substance or technologies used, such as
Unenhanced and Enhanced (contrast) or Laser.
• Character 7 (Qualifier) may be used to specify the
method by which the procedure was performed, or
technologies utilized, such as Intraoperative,
Intravascular, or Transesophageal.
