<p>L'imperatore Costantino ebbe quattro figli: Crispo, Costantino II, Costante e Costanzo II. Tre di loro ebbero un destino tragico. Il primo, Crispo, scomparve in circostanze piuttosto misteriose quando il padre era ancora in vita. Altri due, Costantino II e Costante, rimasero al potere per un periodo piuttosto breve: tre anni il primo (337-340), tredici il secondo (337-361): a entrambi toccò poi una fine piuttosto ingloriosa. Fu il terzogenito, Costanzo II, quello che più di ogni altro volle collocare il proprio regno nel ricordo del padre, a governare più a lungo (337-361). Tuttavia, nonostante i ventiquattro anni di regno e malgrado l'efficace difesa dei confini, lo sforzo, spesso vano, di mantenere la Chiesa unita e i numerosi tentativi di usurpazione sventati, l'opinione comune non ha mai ricordato Costanzo con particolare interesse, probabile riflesso dello sfavore con cui il più grande storico dell'epoca, Ammiano Marcellino, lo consegnò ai posteri.</p>
