DEDICATION
Some 200 years ago, there was an old Rabi (a religious guru of
Jewish people) who lived in Si. Petersburg, Russia. A bishop,
who was a friend of the Rabi. wrote a memoir in which he
discussed a small conversation he had with the Rabi. The Bishop
writes that when he met the Rabi, he asked him “You Jews have
been fighting for a Jewish homeland since time immemorial, will
you Jews ever be victorious in having the Jewish homeland?”
The Rabi responded. “Yes, we will be victorious in having the
Jewish homeland”. Perplexed with the response, the Bishop
asked, "Where is the victory? Every where, all over the world,
you Jews are being persecuted?” Very calmly, the Rabi responded
by stating," The fight for the having the Jewish homeland is still
going on and it has not yet ended yet." The Bishop angrily asked
"But when will this fight get over?” Rabi responded. "The war
for having the Jewish homeland is on till we are victorious."
The Bishop asked the Rabi "What do you people have with you
that you think that you people would be victorious in this war?
You Jewish people have no army, no weapons, no territory and
a small population which is scattered all over the world, which
also is being persecuted”. The Rabi said, "We have a morale to
be victorious, we have will power to be victorious and we have
a determination to be victorious and till the time we have these
three with us, our fight will go on.”

WHY THIS BOOK?
This book is a guide for the students to help them prepare for the
Civil Serviees exam. In my teaching career at Vajiram, 1 have
taught more than one lakh students till dale. In my interaction
with a large number of students, I have realised that the students
have a common set of problems during their preparation, and
this book attempts to answer all their queries. After reading this
book, you w ill have no problem in sitting down at the comfort of
your home and preparing on your own. Whether you are a new
aspirant or a struggling one, you cannot in anyway afford to miss
reading this. This book gives you everything you need - from a
detailed analysis of books to follow and books to avoid and more
importantly, it will teach you how to read and make notes from
the books advised (which many do not get a hang of even after
multiple attempts!). This is a book you need to and will keep on
your table and keep reading it all round the year till you reach
LBSNAA.
Docs this mean that Civil Services can be cracked without
a coaching? Let me keep some facts in front of you. All the
coaching institutes that exist; they do exist because they are in
demand. If the educational institutions like schools and colleges
were able to prepare a student completely, why would there
be any coaching centre? Coaching mostly works for people

who need some kind of handholding and need someone else to
keep them on track. Coaching is necessary as it just gives you
a direction. A person from a small town who has no idea about
the exam or its preparation can go to a coaching centre and can
get help. Coaching centres can provide a general sense of the
kind of questions that are going to be asked; or in the case of the
interview, on how candidates can dress and present themselves.
I do not think just because someone goes to coaching, theycan
crack the exam. However, I leave it up to the reader to take a call
if she or he is interested in taking coaching or not. I believe that
if an aspirant is able to follow what I have explained in the entire
book, then they shall have no problem in preparing even from
home.

THE CIVIL SERVICES
Civil Services are a nationwide exam conducted by the
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The UPSC is a
Constitutional body, established by the Indian Constitution to
conduct the recruitment of officers for the Government of India.
The Civil Services Examination( CSE)i s conducted annually by
the UPSC.
Number of Attempts
1. General Category and OBC Creamy Layer - 6 attempts and
age limit is 2! to 32.
2. Non Creamy Layer OBC - 9 attempts and age limit is 21 to
35.
3. SC and ST candidates - Unlimited attempts and age limit is
21 to 37.
4. Physical Disabled candidates’ age limits: PH-Gcneral: 42.
PH-OBC (non-Crcamy): 45 years; PH-SC/ST: 47 years.
