Project Overview
A LAMP project is one that utilizes the features of Linux, Apache (web server),
MySQL and PHP, (hence the LAMP acronym).

This project will be implemented using the following tools:

1. PHP Dynamic Web Page Interface Controls
2. MySQL Database
3. Java Script
4. The Apache Web Server
5. The Linux Operating System
6. The C Programming Language

The Home Automation application is interfaced to Infrared Sensors and X10 lamp
control devices in order to provide an automated lighting system for the home.

The Home Security feature utilizes the Infrared Sensors to detect movement
within the home environment and to warn the user regarding unauthorized
access to the property.

It should also be noted that the code examples are in the C programming
language. This code could easily be written in C++ but the decision to keep it in C
was to allow for understanding by a wider audience.

Note: The code example provided in this book is provided “as is” with no
indication as to suitability of purpose.

The Home Control / Security system is best discussed by means of the various
web pages that have been developed. Each page presents a picture of your
home below which is identified the navigation screen name.

Note: The user may change the provided home image to one of their own.

These screens are as follows:

1. Security
2. Master
3. Lounge
4. Kitchen
5. Family
6. Steve
7. State
8. Events

These screen names are displayed and the user may transition to the relevant
screen by simply pressing the relevant button name. The idea was to have these
web pages be displayed on an iPAD such that the user could then use the system
to control the house lighting and security system.

There is one additional screen (the Systems screen) which we will discuss layer.

The next line on the web page is a text description that informs the user as to
the use of the displayed screen. Below that is the user interface. In the case of
the Security screen it is a plan layout of the home and location of family
members. For other screens it may be a number of push buttons that can either
control house lights (or other devices), or can select a specific operating mode (a
sequence to switch off various lights for watching television).

The web pages are stored in the Apache HomeControl/php directory.

This screen permits the operator to navigate their way to the other screens.

The text description identifies the current status of the security system.

The rest of the screen provides a plan layout of the home and provides
identification of the various family members (in the above screen there is
someone in the kitchen and I am presently in the study). The house perimeter
border will be displayed in red if the house security is on otherwise it will be
displayed in green. The home sensors are IR (Infra-Red) devices that transmit an
RF signal to a base received. This signal identifies a specific code (Home, Unit)
and the information is then translated to a colored block on the house plan.
During normal operation this information will be used to automatically turn
house lights on and off at night, whereas during security mode it will be used to
control an alarm.

Note: The user may modify the plan layout to suit their own home.

The Master Bedroom Web Page

The Master Bedroom screen allows the user to control the lighting environment.
Currently four light devices can be switched on or off. These are the two bed
side lamps (each can be individually controlled), as can the main bedroom light
and the closet light. It should be noted that the X10 controller that is used has
the capability of also adjusting the brightness of these lamps. This may be
implemented as a future task, however, the current software provides the serial
access to the X10 controller. The software ‘just’ needs to be modified to bring in
the light adjustment feature.

The [Watch TV] button, when pressed will switch off the two bedside lamps
when it is desired to watch television. The closet light will also be turned off.
When watching TV the room lights give the correct viewing ambience so these
lamps are turned on. When desiring to turn in for the night, the operator can
press the [Retire For The Night] button to switch off the family room, kitchen,
lounge and hallway lights.
