I would like to thank my many mentors who have
guided me during my surgical training and career at the
Hospital for Special Surgery. I would like to acknowledge
my co-editors, Drs. Moe Lim and Andy Pearle, who were
my senior residents and great role models of what an
“HSS resident” was supposed to be. I also have to thank
two senior mentors, my present surgeon-in-chief, Dr.
Thomas Sculco, who has been supportive of me since I
was a medical student, and of course my father, Dr. C.S.
Ranawat , who has been the single greatest driving
force in my life and career. His advice and example have
truly defined the word, mentor. And, of course, I have to
thank my wife, Dana, and my two children, Cooper and
Viviana, who have shown me unwavering love and
support. I love you guys, and this book is for you.

As residents at Hospital for Special Surgery, we were
surrounded by some of the greatest minds in
orthopedics. Over a century of ever-expanding
orthopedic wisdom was passed on through the
residency program. While we could never capture the
intricacies of this wisdom in a book, this publication
represents a “Cliff-Notes” version of the teachings at the
Hospital for Special Surgery.

who contributed to this book. Without their expertise, it
would not have been possible to bring this project
