PREFACE
The present study is a revised version of my doctoral dissertation,
which was accepted by the University of Hamburg in the summer of
1987. I would like to thank my mentor, Prof. Dr. föaus Koch, for his
undaunted willingness to discuss the issues and for his insightful criticisms
and suggestions. From his active interest in the study and from his
seminars and lectures I have learned a great deal and have no doubt
incurred a debt which cannot be repaid. Prof. Dr. Bernd Janowski was
the secondary reader of the dissertation and made several helpful
comments. He, too, has taken an active interest in my academic progress,
for which I am grateful. I would also like to thank Prof. Dr. Otto Kaiser
