PREFACE
This volume contains papers presented at the Tenth Long Ashton Symposium in
September 1986, which was convened to assess the evidence for and against the
view that plant hormones are endogenous regulators of plant development. The
meeting also aimed to focus on and assess promising strategies for future research.
The importance of bringing different approaches to bear on the problem of plant
hormone action was recognised from the outset in planning the Symposium which
was organised jointly by Long Ashton Research Station and the British Plant
Growth Regulator Group.
Early studies of plant hormones derived from attempts to understand plant
development in terms of responses to the environment. This led to the concept
which dominated our thinking for many years, namely that without hormones there
would be no plant growth. Certainly the view that the concentration of hormones in
tissues controls growth has been challenged by those who maintain that tissue
sensitivity to hormones is more important than hormone concentration per se.
Others find these arguments ill-conceived in terms of understanding the role of
hormones in plant development. Thus the Symposium and these proceedings are
timely as the subject might be considered by some to be at a cross-roads.
Our current knowledge of the biosynthesis, metabolism and transport of plant
hormones has benefited from increasingly sophisticated analytical procedures.
However, progress on primary hormone action, including the characterisation of
receptors and the possible involvement of secondary messengers, has been
disappointingly slow. Advances in immunological techniques should permit the
eventual subcellular localisation of hormones, their metabolising enzymes and
primary receptors, and hence the determination of hormone concentration at the
active site. We shall still need to incorporate such information at the molecular
level into a credible conceptual framework to explain the role of hormones in plant
development. In attempting to achieve this objective, speakers were asked to
examine hormone action from the molecular level to that of the whole plant and to
be deliberately speculative. This led to lively discussions after each session (not
recorded in this volume).
The Symposium was opened with the Douglas Wills Lecture, given by Professor
Carl Leopold. In many respects, progress in research on animal hormones seems
greater than in the plant sciences and there may well be merit in following progress
in animal hormone research as suggested by Professor Leopold. The organisers are
grateful to him for setting the scene so effectively for the Symposium papers that
followed.

The Symposium comprised four sessions. The introductory session considered
the coordinating role of hormones in plant growth and development, and focussed
on hormone action at the molecular level, including their binding to receptors and
their control of gene expression. The next two sessions embraced contributions on
the experimental manipulation of development by genetic (notably by biochemical
mutants), chemical (for example, with gibberellin/biosynthesis inhibitors) and
environmental (including drought stress) means. All these approaches consolidated
the central importance of hormones in plant growth. In the final session, three
speakers suggested some promising avenues for future research into the physiology
(Dr D. J. Osborne), biochemistry (Dr J. L. Stoddart) and molecular biology
(Professor T. C. Hall) of plant hormones.
We hope that delegates to the Symposium (over 230 from 25 countries) found the
deliberately wide-ranging discussion of hormone action in plant development a
thoroughly thought-provoking and critical appraisal of the subject and that the
published proceedings will be equally stimulating to a wider audience.
We are grateful to many of our colleagues, both at Long Ashton and on the
Programme Sub-committee of the British Plant Growth Regulator Group, for
unstinting help at all stages of the organisation of the Symposium, especially Mrs
Joan Llewellyn and Miss Helen Clarke for their essential secretarial skills. We also
