Preface
Historiography: the writing of history; written history. The word's earliest known occurrence in English dates from 1569, but it has much older Greek roots: it is 
 to write. 1 The word passed from Latin into Italian and French, and its use in German is analogous. In recent years, its meaning has developed along two 
complementary courses, referring on the one hand to the person of the historiographer and on the other to the object—that is, his work. In essence, the 
historiographer was until the time of the Enlightenment an official historian appointed in connection with a court. Voltaire, caustic as ever but fundamentally accurate, 
wrote in his Dictionnaire philosophique: "In France, the name historiographer is usually given to a man of letters who, as a pensioner, is paid to write history, as it 
used to be said. . . . It is very hard for the historiographer of a prince not to lie; the historiographer of a republic may flatter less, but he does not tell all the truth."2 
Since the nineteenth century, however, the word historiography has been used to refer not only to the writing of history, but principally to the corpus of written 
history, describing fully constituted sets of historical works: the historiography of Byzantium, for instance, the historiography of the reign of Louis XIV, or the 
historiography of modern architecture. In other words, it denotes the total number of

the histories written about a specific chronological period or thematic unit, and, by extension, it is applied to knowledge about or the broader study of such a set of 
works. The contemporary and more scholarly use of the term is, of course, the latter, which is equally what historiography means in my title. Nonetheless, the original 
sense lingers on beneath the surface of the texts and can be read between their lines, revealing the essentially personal involvement of the author (with or without a 
princely court) in the understanding and interpretation of the events he describes. Returning to the original meaning of the roots, we could almost say that historians 
recreate the course of history. As will be seen below, that is the true field of my intervention in the historiography of modern architecture: I explore the manner in 
which the historical discourse has been enunciated and the degree to which, ultimately, it has been the vehicle for a specific and fully fledged point of view—in other 
words, a theory.
The second part of my title refers to modern architecture. Here, clearly, the meaning relates to the specific chronological period and thematic unit of this 
historiographical study. I use the terms modern architecture and the modern movement as equivalent descriptions of the new architecture of the twenties and thirties 
of this century and of its extrapolation—in both the material sense (in the projects of the masters and those taught directly by them) and ideologically (the reception of 
modernity)—over the three decades that followed. Of course, I also use other equivalents, usually charged with additional nuances and other connotations (such as 
the International Style or rationalism), when they belong to the basic vocabulary of the historians whose work I am examining, such as Henry­Russell Hitchcock 
and Bruno Zevi. If we accept that modern architecture had an end, then it is certainly difficult to place in time and space—despite the precision of Charles Jencks, who 
contended that it "died in St Louis, Missouri, on July 15, 1972, at 3.32 p.m. (or thereabouts)." 3 In this study, I take the view that the questioning of the modern 
movement had even in the early seventies moved in the direction of a different discourse, one that continues to determine the manner in which we think and the field 
in which we conduct our researches. I thus locate what I am calling the "end" of modern architecture

at that point in time—at least for the purpose of setting the necessary boundaries on our corpus and on written architecture in general. The shifts in the meaning of the 
term modern in the texts of the corpus and the more general relationship between old and new that lies at the root of any interpretation of modernity are, in any case, 
among the principal objects of my study. They are developed most fully in the last chapter.
The first form of this book took shape in 1987 and was my thesis for a Doctorat d'Etat at the Université de Paris VIII under the supervision of Françoise Choay. I 
owe her a special debt of gratitude for her productive advice and criticism in that first stage, for her constant support, and for her insistence, in the years to come when 
I was under the fascination of new themes and other projects, that I should take another look at Historiographie de l'architecture moderne. The views of all the 
other members of the jury—Giorgio Ciucci, Hubert Damisch, Anatole Kopp, and Geert Bekaert—were decisive in what amounted to the rewriting of this study, as 
was the advice of Kostas Axelos, who was to have been a member of the jury but did not ultimately join it. My cordial thanks to all of them.
To rewrite a text after a break of ten years is a much more difficult undertaking than it would seem at first sight. The main problem is not that the data have changed: 
the author, on his part, has changed too, moving into constantly wider fields. This, then, is a new book, although its initial concept, its idea, and its structure follow in 
the tracks of its ancestor. Over the intervening years, I have most particularly to thank my students in the Department of Architecture at the National Technical 
University of Athens, who have taught me how to measure creative communication. Valuable contributions have been made by those who read the manuscript, and
