PREFACE
For fellowship support of the initial phases of this project 1 am indebted
to the Hannah Institute for the History of Medicine.
An especial debt of gratitude is owed to Richard Durling, who suggested
the project to me. I would also like to thank Paul Potter, whose personal li-
brary was a great boon, and Beate Gundert for their help and hospitality dur-
ing my stay in Canada. Libraries have, of course, provided the place and the
material for much of my work, and I would like to express my gratitude in
