hen HGTV Magazine asked

yes! This really is my dream
since 2017.
job, because magazines are my happy place. Of
course, I love TV shows (after all, I have one), but
on screen, home reveals happen in the blink of
an eye; on social media, they go by even faster.
When you read a magazine, you have time to
sit with beautiful photographs of a space and
learn about the design. For detail lovers like me,
finding all that inspiration and info in one place
is a treat. (I always read the editor’s letter, too,
because who doesn’t love hearing about all the
cool stuff that happens behind the scenes? I
can’t believe I’m writing one right now!)
As I started planning this issue, I kept thinking
about what an opportunity and fun challenge it
was. I’m super competitive, so I wanted to knock
it out of the park. I’m going to use another sports
metaphor because I’m so excited for fall football
season: In all games, and in my life, I always leave
my heart on the field. Whenever a door opens
even the tiniest amount for me, I squeeze my
whole body through and give it my all—which explains why I decided to buy and totally renovate a
house in six weeks for the cover story. We could have photographed an older project of mine, but
that wouldn’t have been nearly as exciting as finding an old A-frame (in Arrowbear, CA), gutting it,
and turning it into my dream cabin just in time for our press deadline! Take a tour on page 55.
The rest of this issue is packed with my favorite things, including faux plants, great-looking safety
glasses, and Ree Drummond’s caramel apples, plus design ideas from some of my HGTV buddies.
We even took a spin around my hometown of Huntington Beach, CA, on the prowl for houses with
the best curb appeal. I hope you find as much joy and inspiration in this issue as I did.
