In Engeland krijgt koningin Wilhelmina op haar landgoed Stubbings House bezoek van de Britse premier Winston Churchill. Hij stelt haar voor een onverwacht en verschrikkelijk dilemma. Tot haar wanhoop zal Wilhelmina moeten instemmen met zijn geheime verzoek, waardoor de oorlog een totaal andere wending zal krijgen.Acht jaar later: Nederland vecht een eigen oorlog in Nederlands-Indie, waar de nationalisten van Soekarno de onafhankelijke Republik Indonesia hebben uitgeroepen. Voormalig inlichtingenofficier Arnie Springer hoort dat zijn oude liefde op Java is verdwenen nadat ze samen werd gezien met de beruchte Nederlandse deserteur Poncke Princen. Hoewel Arnie na de gruwelen van de jappenkampen gezworen heeft nooit terug te gaan, vliegt hij in april 1948 naar Batavia. In de tropische hitte onderneemt hij een levensgevaarlijke zoektocht, en belandt in een mijnenveld van intriges waarin alles verband lijkt te houden met het pact van Wilhelmina en Churchill in Stubbings House.
