Afghanistan Archival Group

28001 Large Grouping of Afghanistan Archival Photographs
This group of 59 archival photographs spans from the 1930s to 1970s. It starts with a single Kingdom Treasury Issue and runs into Bank of Afghanistan. Many of
the pieces are dated, typically months before the issued date, and most feature serial numbers. The presentation from beginning to end points to a bank or printer
employee that was assembling the photographs for bank records. Nearly all are mounted on cardstock and have been removed from another backing, presumably
an archival book as one fully intact page would indicate. Included are photos of some of the following Pick numbers:
Pick 19 50 Afghanis;
Pick UNL, 1317 (1939) 50 Afghanis;
Pick 21, 27A;
Pick 29, 30, 31;
Pick 39;
And approximately 48 whole and partial design pieces of unissued or nearly as-issued designs on cards dated 19.7.65, 21.10.65, 10.2.67, 6.10.69, and 9.3.73. (Total:

One Pick 10b has several year date stamps on it. Very Fine or better.

28003 Afghanistan Ministry of Finance 2; 5; 10; 20; 50; 100 Afghanis
1936 Pick 15; 16; 17; 18; 19; 20.
The three lowest denominations have block letters and red serial numbers
while the three larger denominations (20, 50, 100 Afghanis) have only
block letters. Also included is a sheet of blank watermarked paper used
to print the 5 or perhaps 10 Afghanis denomination. The 2 Afghanis
note grades Extremely Fine while the other denominations grade Crisp
Uncirculated. (Total: 7 items) (1,200-1,500)

Pick 27.
The last two third party grade 63 and above Pick 27 examples to cross the
auction block that we know about was in 2017. Both were graded by PMG
and neither earned the EPQ grade modifier. They were a 63 and a 64 and
they received winning bids in the $1,872 to $2,643 range respectively.

Pick 24a.
Any sign of a distinct fold is now all but obscured by the third party hold-
er. This widely margined, pen cancelled example grades PCGS Choice
About New 58. (1,500-2,000)

A nicely preserved example well worth the grade of PCGS Choice New 63.
It does show embossing through out the note. A PMG 55 Pick 27A realized a
final price of $3,231.25 in 2017. (4,000-6,000)

Pick 24a.
The 20 Afghanis is perhaps the most elusive denomination of the 1939
issue. This lightly folded example is housed in a problem free holder and
still retains much its original freshness and is notoriously difficult to find
outside of the most heavily circulated grade ranges. PCGS Extremely
Fine 45. (3,000-5,000)

ALBANIA
28008 Afghanistan Bank of Afghanistan 500 Afghanis SH1327 (1948)
Pick 35a.
Afghanistan’s 1948 issue has some of the most colorful, aesthetically
pleasing notes that the country has ever issued. This example, which
grades PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ, is no exception. (1,500-2,000)

Pick 4a.
King Zog I’s portrait appears at right on this colorful large format note. It
also features a watermark of Skanderbeg, a 15th century Albanian noble-
man and military leader. Auction appearances for this number have been
few. PMG About Uncirculated 50, with some light stains in the upper
right margin. (2,000-3,000)

Pick 36.
A wonderful array of color sweeps across this high denomination issue.
Four wide margins round out a true Gem presentation. PCGS Gem New

28011 Albania Banca Nazionale 100 Franka Ari ND (1926) Pick 4sp
Specimen Proof.
At the grade of PMG Uncirculated 62 EPQ, this is easily the nicest of the
three Pick 4sp notes to participate in auctions within the last four years
that we know about. The last example to cross the auction block was in
2017 when a raw 45 realized $1,320. (2,000-3,000)

28014 Angola Banco De Angola 20 Angolares 1951 Pick 83s Specimen.
Salvador Corréa de Sá e Benevides and the Reconquest of Luanda (1648)
are featured on this example issued for the Portuguese possession in
Africa. Previous mounting is noted. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. (700-

Specimen.
PMG has graded only one example of this Specimen equal with none
higher. A raw XF Pick 89s realized over $1,400 in 2014. PMG Gem

Specimen.
A Specimen number that we have not entertained before and is also not
valued in any grade in the Krause reference. PMG About Uncirculated

28013 Angola Banco Nacional Ultramarino 20 Escudos 1.1.1921 Pick

59s Specimen.
A handsome Specimen with excellent margins and color. Two red ink
“ANGOLA” overprints are seen on this example that earned a grade of
PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 with the usual printer’s annotations. (750-
