This book is dedicated to my first herb teachers: George Kitchie, Christine
Harrison, Yan Yun, Jian-Shu Chen, Caylor Wadlington, and Shi Cheng. T h e i r
enthusiasm in teaching their subject matter inspired me to enter and explore
the exciting world of Chinese medicinals and to successfully incorporate
these substances into my practice. To this day, I admire their skills and abil-
ities as healers and herbalists and deeply appreciate what they shared with

belief in its importance and in me brought it to fruition. I would like to thank

stellar employees for their support during this project. Their patience and
enthusiasm was much appreciated throughout the long process of conception
to publication. I would also like to acknowledge and thank my friend and men-
to r , Caylor Wadlington, for his timely reminder that our Chinese medicinal
pharmacy is, after all, a valuable and safe addition to the tradition of healing.
When I was overwhelmed by the inherent dangers in every medicinal I
encountered, his was the voice of balance which kept me from becoming an
alarmist. And finally, I would like to acknowledge the support and patience of
my wife, Helen, and son, Alex. Again they permitted me to lock myself away
from them for days at a time while I delved through piles of texts and clicked
away relentlessly at the keys of my laptop. They suffered my bouts of fatigue
and frustration with their usual grace and love, and for this I am truly grateful.
