Acknowledgements
The essays collected in this volume are a selection of scholarly papers
delivered originally at the 1994 Sydney German Studies Symposium.
The event, one of a series of academic Conferences devoted to topics in
Contemporary German literature, culture and society organised
annually or bi-annually by the Department of German Studies at the
New
University of South Wales, was held at the Goethe Institute in
Sydney from 21 to 24 July. The Symposium was attended by some fifty
scholars from eleven countries around the world who engaged in an
animated, friendly and critical debate on the controversial and
fascinating work of Germany's foremost Contemporary dramatist.
Under the title 'Heiner Müller: Theatre/History/Performance/
the Symposium also featured a number of theatrical productions, a
three-day mini-festival of peformances of plays, scenarios and texts
by and about Heiner Müller: Cathy Vogan and Dominik Barbier
(Paris) screened and discussed their experimental video T was

Hamlet/ Ulla Neuerburg and Gail Rothschild (Brooklyn, York)
discovered a disused nineteenth Century harbourside factory as the site
of their performance/installation of a collage of texts around
Medeamaterial the Public Works Theatre Company of Sydney,

directed by Paul Dwyer, performed their collage of texts by Müller
entitled 'in my thoughts I call him No. 1' at the Centre for
Performance Studies, University of Sydney, and at the Performance
Space, Sydney; and students of the 'Fatzer Workshop,' conducted at
the Centre for Performance Studies, performed a
Brecht/Müller/Wilson Version of Fatzer directed by Andrzej Wirth
(Berlin) with choreography by Emma Lew Thomas (Los Angeles).
As organiser of the Symposium, I wish to thank all participants
who made the series of events an entertaining, stimulating and
productive experience. I should also like to gratefully acknowledge
the contributions of individuals and organisations who provided
financial Support and who helped in the planning, preparation and
Organisation of the Symposium, in particular Adrian Hall and
Michael Goldberg, (College of Fine Arts, UNSW), Gay McAuley
(Centre for Performance Studies, University of Sydney), and the
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at UNSW. The participation of
scholars from the Federal Republic of Germany was greatly
