Aboutsevenyearsago,fourofus(JerryFox,JacobGershon,
MaxKramer,andDavidMoses)whowereparticipantsinacar-
diac rehabilitation program realized that a book about heart
attack, written by people who had had them, could not only
beunique,butmightinspireandeducatemillionsthroughout
the world. It could be helpful even to those who had not had
aheartattackbutwereeagertopreventone.Afterwedecided
togoahead,somereluctancesetinaboutplacingourpersonal
medicalhistoriesinthepublicrealm.Theproposallanguished
untilwerealizedthatbyusingpseudonyms(aswehavedone)
wecouldprotectourownprivacyandthatofthoseclosetous.*
Wealsofeltweneededasolidscientificgroundworkforany
suchdiscussion.Soweaskedeightwell-qualifiedprofessionals
to write chapters on heart attack, treatment, nutrition, and
guidelinesforchoosinganeffectiveprogram,aswellasachap-
teroncardiacrehabilitationinaction.(Ifyouwouldlikemore
information on any of these topics, see the Notes at the back
ofthebook.Noneofthereferencescitedthererequirespecific
medical training. A Glossary provides help with any difficult
medical terms.) The reader will find that some scientific ma-
terialiscoveredmorethanonce.Wedecidedtoretainthisover-
lapfortworeasons:thematerialaddressedisliterallyamatterof
