FOREWORD
I would like to start by saying how pleased I am that Health Promotion in
Midwifery has reached a second edition, the first having been more popular than my
editors at Arnold or I had ever dreamed possible. The development of the principles
and practices laid out in this second edition will enable midwives and other health
professionals to keep health promotion at the forefront of their midwifery practice.
The popularity of this, and other publications, demonstrates that midwifery and
health promotion are very comfortable partners in the minds and hearts of
midwives.
While many of the principles of health promotion have followed a continuing pattern
of growth and development in recent years, the popularity of the term ‘public health’ has
re-entered British politics and health care, with an increasingly stronger emphasis being
placed on preventative health care, social support of disadvantaged families and health
protection that explores environmental threats to health. All of these require the input
of midwives and midwifery to move our understanding of health issues forward, and no
other health profession is so ideally placed to enable women and young families to
benefit from increasing good-quality information that is fairly distributed and
sensitively shared. This book will enable midwives to learn about many different aspects
of health promotion, to consider how best to put that information into practice, and
how we prepare future generations of mothers and midwives to gain improvements in
the health of people and populations.
Although societies rely on Governments and Health Departments to lay down the
parameters of how we approach public health and finance initiatives and care, it
should never be forgotten that it is individual midwives who meet and influence
individual women and their families, and can make real differences to how those
people deal with health issues during their childbearing years and beyond. This book

will help midwives to conduct their professional lives with greater understanding,
deeper knowledge and better skills. It can be used to help midwives and student
midwives to formulate questions and relate the principles and practice described to the
reality of what they see, and howthey work. Examples of some of the questions readers
may wish to address are:
• What are the major health issues that need to be addressed in local midwifery practice
(examples may be obesity in pregnancy, mental health issues, how parent education is
delivered)?
• How are recent Government reports being interpreted locally to address health needs?
• Are my colleagues and I asking women the right questions at antenatal bookings, and
subsequently? Are the right support mechanisms in place to follow up women with
specific health needs, be they physical, psychological, social or environmental, or a
combination of these?
• How are data on maternal and neonatal health outcomes being collected locally, and how
are the results incorporated into practice, especially by midwives?
• What local research, audit and education are in progress, looking at and disseminating
how the role of the midwife can best meet the health needs of the local population?
