In this comprehensive book, the authors
provide a rich variety of innovative techniques
- including guided imagery, role-playing,
storytelling, music, hypnosis, and massage
that therapists can ltse to help women identify
and express feelings, understand the meaning of
their experiences, and discover and use their
own inner resources, or "voices;' to find solu
tions to problems and lead more fulfilling lives.
The authors reveal, for example, how many
women's preoccupation with food and dieting
and the related prevalence of anorexia and
bulimia-is linked to popular but harmful ideas
about how women should look and act. They
explain how therapists can use consciousness
raising exercises, visualization, and other meth
ods to help clients examine these ideas, under
stand why they develop eating disorders, learn
to accept themselves, and change unhealthy
behavior patterns. And the authors detail how to
organize and run successful workshops, support
groups, and individual and group therapy ses
sions designed to overcome the limitations of
traditional therapy and help today's women
solve the problems they face.
To illustrate how feminist therapy works in
actual practice, each chapter includes a client's
personal account of therapy, describing in her
own words and insights the process through
which therapist and client work closely together
to confront the real-life obstacles that devalue
and limit women, to achieve a new sense of inner
strength, and to empower clients to make impor-
