Throughoutthecourseofmyworkinmultihopmobileadhocnetworks(MANET)
overthelastseveralyears,Ireachedtheconclusionthatmobilitymodelsandperfor-
mancemetricsneedtobetreatedindetailindesigningthesenetworksthatarethe
ultimatefrontierinwirelesscommunications.Awidevarietyofmobilitymodelscan
beusedbymobilenodes.Accuraterepresentationsofthecharacteristicsofmobile
nodesarekeyinunderstandingwhetheragivenprotocolusedinthewirelesscom-
munications network is useful in a particular type of ad hoc mobile scenario. The
mobilityperformancemetricsaimtocapturethecharacteristicsofdifferentmobility
patternsandcanbeusedtoanalyzetheperformanceofcommunicationsprotocols.
Thisbookisanattempttoputtogetherthetheoreticalaspectsofthemobilitymodels
andmetricsthatarerelevanttothemobileadhocnetwork.
Themobilitymodelsaredividedintosevendifferentmajorgroupsbasedontheir
basic mobility characteristics: individual mobility, group mobility, autoregressive
mobility, flocking mobility, virtual game-driven mobility, non-recurrent mobility,
and time-variant community mobility. Many different variants of mobility models
existineachgroupandhavebeendescribedinachapterdedicatedtoeachgroup.
Themobilityperformancemetricsaregroupedintosevenmajorcategoriesbased
on the parameters that are being considered in each group: direct mobility met-
rics,mobilitymeasuremetrics,link-andpath-basedmetrics,networkconnectivity
metrics,quality-of-servicemetrics,energy performance metrics,and mobilitypre-
diction metrics. All mobility performance parameters for each group have been
describedineachchapter.
The book has been organized into eight chapters: I. Introduction, II. Individual
MobilityModels,III.GroupMobilityModels,IV.AutoregressiveMobilityModels,
V. Flocking/Swarm Mobility Models, VI. Virtual Game-Driven Mobility Models,
VII.Non-recurrentMobilityModels,andVIII.Social-BasedCommunityMobility
Models. Readers familiar with mobile ad hoc networks will find interesting using
the details of the mobility models and metrics in designing their wireless commu-
nications networks where mobile nodes move from place to place with no fixed
infrastructures.
