theycontinuedtobepaid forandsentout.Aftersendingout1500copies of the19pageversion
(“TheOutlineof Listening”)thedecisionwas madetowritethis book;thereasonsincludedthe
factthattheamountofinformationabout"ListeningActivity"wasso muchlargerthanwhat had
been knowninthebeginning.
Asthewritingofthe “HandbookofListening–TransactionalAnalysis oftheListening
Activity”was beingcompletedtherewasasenseofsatisfactionatseeingthematerialcontained
initbecoming“encoded information”whichondecoding(reading)couldsetmindsandbodies
ofotherpersonsin motiontotestthethesesandreproduce,ornot,theresultsdescribed.
Asforthefuture,evenas thisparticularencoding wasdrawingtoaclosethere wasa
senseofrestlessdissatisfaction. “Yeah,butIdidn'tgetthis in,andtherearetheexcitingnew
developments onthatitem.Besides,thereisonlyaparagraphonpage... about ... . That
shouldreallybeachapterinitself!”andsoonitwent.Thisisconsistentwithwhatotherwriters

Listeningisdefinedhereas “thatmovingofapersonmadeas astimulusforand/orin
responsetotheaudibleenvironment,particularlyforthespokenwordofanotherparticular
person.” Itisadditionallydefinedas afocusing-converging,selectingactivity,doneprincipally
inconjunctionwithanother,atalkingperson.
Thedefinitions givenin dictionaries usethewords“harken,takeheed,beadvised,to give
anear.”Thesedefinitionslackfinitenessandspecificity,tendinginsteadto becircular.
Otherauthorsonthissubject oflisteningagreethatthisisamostimportantqualityfora
persontodevelopand attendto,whetherwritingforadvertisingcompanies,salesorganizations,
businessmanagementorfortheoccasionalpsychiatrictreatise,writersstatelisteningis
“somethingwemustdo,”“shouldbedone,”“good listeninghabitsneedto beattendedto”;i.e.
thatparticularmaterialis predominantlyexhortativeoflisteningbeingdesirable,anddemanding
ofitsbeingaccomplished.
Another measureforlisteningistheamountof memoryretentionofmaterial listenedto
andtheabilitytoorganize andrepeat whatwasheardandlistenedto.
Listening
The“HandbookofListening -TransactionalAnalysis of theListening Activity”shows:
1. Theactivityoflistening is manifestedbyvisible, physicalbodilymovement.
2. Listening activityis tobedifferentiatedfromhearing.Hearingisasemi-automatic,
auditory-environmentscanningoperation.
3. Thenon-listenerischaracterizedbyan absenceofvisible,physicalmovement, an
eyeblinkratelessthanonceevery5seconds,
4. In mostgroup meetings morethan90percentofman-hoursarespentdoingsomething
otherthantalking.
