Contributors
Liliana Azevedo is a Sociology PhD candidate at Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa
and associated researcher at the Emigration Observatory, Portugal. Simultaneously she is an
associated doctoral student at the Swiss Center for Competence in Research – The Migration
Mobility Nexus (nccr – on the move). Her fields of research include migration and ageing,
gender, life course, transnational families, and home-making.
Jemima Nomunume Baada is a PhD candidate in the Department of Women’s Studies and
Feminist Research at Western University, Canada. Her research interests are in the areas of
migration, climate change, multilateral investments and health; and how these differentially
affect rural dwellers, particularly women. Jemima’s doctoral research is funded by the Vanier
Canada Graduate Scholarship and the Hopper-Bhatia Canada Fellowship.
Caroline B. Brettell is University Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of
Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. From 2012 to 2018 she was the Ruth Collins
Altshuler Founding Director of the Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute. She has spent
her career studying immigration in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Her particular
interests are in gender and migration, identity and citizenship, and immigrants in cities. In
addition to numerous journal articles and book chapters, she is the author, co-author or editor/
co-editor of 17 books.
Amy Carattini holds a PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of Maryland
with a research interest in social class and comparing migration experiences. She currently
coordinates anthropology at the Rockville and Takoma Park/Silver Spring campuses of
Montgomery College in Maryland. In addition, she has had ongoing collaborative experiences
working with colleagues in the Organization of American States (OAS) editing immigration
reports and in the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) as a research consultant and with
co-editing the journal Practicing Anthropology (2015–2018).
Jeffrey H. Cohen is a Professor of Anthropology at the Ohio State University with research
focused on migration, rural development and food in Mexico, Turkey and China. He is the author
of numerous articles and books, including: Eating Soup Without a Spoon: Anthropological
Theory and Method in the Real World (2015) and Cultures of Migration: The Global Nature
of Contemporary Movement (2011). Currently, he directs the project ‘Household Producer
Effects of Rural Diet Transformation’ for the National Science Foundation.
Jennifer A. Cook joined the Tower Center for Public Policy and International Affairs
at Southern Methodist University as a Postdoctoral Fellow after receiving her PhD in
Anthropology from the University of Connecticut in 2017. Her research focuses on Mexico–
US migration, transnational family and labor issues, and im/migrant il/legality. Her current
book project, tentatively titled Pathways to Mobility: Legal Migration in Transnational
Mexico, uses multi-sited ethnographic methods to examine Mexican lawful permanent resi-
dents’ engagements with the family-based immigration system.
