PREFACE
To THIS EIGHTH EDITION of the late Mr. William Gardner's Chemi-
cal Synonyms and Trade Names there have been added some 3,300
new entries, principally in the fields of plastics, alloys and pharma-
ceuticals. A number of entries describing products known to the
Editors to be no longer commercially available have been deleted,
with the principal object of keeping the bulk of the book within
reasonable bounds; but it has been possible to add nearly 400 names
to the Index of Manufacturers to be found at the end of the book.
The sum of these additions and deletions represents a net increase
of about 10 per cent, in the scope of this Eighth Edition as com-
pared with its predecessor published in 1971.
As in earlier editions, all entries known to the Editors to be
proprietary trade names have been distinguished by a reference
number appearing in brackets in, or at the end of, the definition
itself, thus " keying " the entry to the Index of Manufacturers
mentioned above. Only in a few cases, however, has it been possi-
ble to add this reference number to the many older entries in the
book, principally because the source of these older entries can no
longer be traced and the existence of possible proprietary rights
in them be thereafter investigated. To the regret of the Editors,
many of the new entries in this Edition also lack their appropriate
reference number, for the reason that mention of proprietary rights
is frequently not made in the trade and professional literature from
which the Editors have perforce drawn the bulk of their primary
information.
Arising from this very point, the Editors and their Publishers
wish to repeat with emphasis a warning given in the Prefaces to
most of the earlier editions of this book. It is a matter of regret
to them that the presence of a name in " Gardner " has frequently
caused difficulty for manufacturers and patent agents trying to
register that name as a trade mark in certain countries of the world.
Registrars sometimes take the view that, because a word appears
in " Gardner ", it must necessarily be a word of such general

currency in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry that it would
be wrong to restrict the right to use it in advertisements or other
promotional literature to a single person or body corporate.
Alternatively, they sometimes resist the plea that a word appearing
in " Gardner " is already a registered trade name elsewhere in the
world by pointing out that the word in question, though defined
in " Gardner ", is not there specifically stated to be a proprietary
trade name.
It is hoped that these difficulties may be obviated if the follow-
ing facts are borne in mind.
Words and names appear and are defined in " Gardner " princi-
pally because they are words and names in common usage. But
many words and names are in common usage precisely because they
are trade names which have been vigorously promoted as such by
the person or corporation owning them. Nearly every entry in
" Gardner", old or new, has been abstracted from published
technical literature. Whenever it has been possible to deduce
from the source of the information that the name in question is
owned and used by a person or body corporate to describe one or
more of their products, the fact that the name is claimed as a pro-
prietary one has been recorded. The same rule has been applied
in cases where the fact that the word is a trade name is either a
matter falling within the personal knowledge of one of the Editors,
or is obviously deducible on other grounds.
Many entries in " Gardner " may be, and some doubtless are,
proprietary trade names in one or more parts of the world without
that fact being known to the Editors, and it by no means follows
that an entry defined in " Gardner " without any indication of
proprietary status is not in fact a registered trade name.
To those manufacturers and patent agents who have provided
details of, and draft definitions for, a sizeable proportion of the new
entries in this Eighth Edition of " Gardner ", the Editors and their
Publishers express grateful appreciation. Communications from
interested parties seeing defined herein, unqualified by a proprie-
tary reference, a word or name in which proprietary rights are
claimed are always welcomed by the Publishers at their offices in
