In Memoriam
This Handbook of Antimicrobial Resistance was just finalized when we learned
about the sudden and tragic passing of our dear friend and colleague Dr. Mark
Wainberg.MarkwasaprofessoratMcGillUniversityandthedirectoroftheMcGill
AIDSCentreattheLadyDavisInstituteforMedicalResearchinMontreal.
His interests went beyond research and science, and he spoke loudly for those
whosevoicesweretoooftennotheard.Hewaswellknownfordeliveringtalksand
speeches with passion and conviction that were brilliant and injected with humor.
Mark cared. He cared about people. He cared about significant problems and was
alwaysmotivatedtofindsolutions.Itisthereforenotsurprisingthathechosetowork
on HIV where he was among the true pioneers in the field. He was determined to
helppeoplelivingwithHIVatsomanylevels.Markwasknownforhiscontributions
tothediscoveryoflamivudine,hewasknownforhistirelesseffortstogetlife-saving
antiretroviraldrugstothosewhowereindesperateneed,andhewasknownforhis
fight against stigmatization. Mark was a dedicated advocate and scientist in one
person.Hispassionforthecausewasunprecedented.
ItisdifficulttosaywhetherMark hadafavoriteresearchtopic.Theproblemof
resistance to antiviral drugs was certainly on top of the list. Mark and his team
identified novel mutations that reduce drug susceptibility, he elucidated the under-
lyingbiochemicalmechanisms,andheestablishedresistancetechnologies,toname

afewofhisremarkableachievements.Heimmediatelyagreedtoactasaneditorand
