Introduction to the GRE
The GRE is one of the most widely accepted graduate admissions test across the globe. Earlier it used to
be popular only amongst students looking for non-management courses but now the Revised GRE
General Test is accepted by several business schools as well, such as Harvard Business School and The
Wharton School, for their MBA programs.
The Revised GRE General Test comprises the following three sections:
1) Analytical Writing
2) Quantitative Reasoning
3) Verbal Reasoning
The scope of this book will be limited only to the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE Revised General
test.
To provide students with a comprehensive resource that meets all their GRE verbal needs, we have come
up with this book - the GRE Verbal Grail. This book covers every question type tested on the GRE verbal
section in detail, providing both strategies and sufficient practicc questions to perfect these strategies on.
This book will first take you through the Text Completion section followed by the Sentence Equivalence
section. Each of these sections will cover strategies relevant to that section along with a 100-question
practice set for each.
This book will then take you through the Reading Comprehension section, covering each question type
tested in this section in detail. There is a special sub-section dedicated to Critical Reasoning type
questions that are increasingly being tested on the GRE.
Vocabulary has always played an important role in preparing for the GRE and, while the stress on
vocabulary has gone down in the GRE revised General Test, you still need to cover around a 1000 words
before you can confidently tackle the actual test. The last section of this book contains a 1000 word High
frequency word list along with a separate list of frequently confused deceptive words.

GRE Verbal Reasoning
The CRE Revised General lest will comprise exactly two verbal sections (barring any unscored section) of
30 minutes duration each, with 20 questions in each section, Ihe questions will be divided into three
question types - Text Completion, Sentence l-.quivalence, and Reading Comprehension.
Ihe following is the break-up of these question types within each verbal reasoning section:
1) Text Completion - A questions in each section
2) Sentence Equivalence - 4 questions in each section
3) Reading Comprehension - 10 questions in each section from approx 5 passages
Essentially, the GRE Verbal Reasoning section will test students on the following two areas - Vocabulary
and Comprehension. Ihe Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence questions will primarily test
students on their vocabulary skills while the Reading Comprehension questions will test a students'
understanding of unfamiliar textual matter.
Ik’fore we look at each question type in detail, it is important to point out the importance of vocabulary
on the GRE Revised General Test. Then.* seems to be a general belief among students that the Revised
GRE lays much less stress on vocabulary compared to the older GRE test. However, if you look at the
break-up of the verbal reasoning section, you will notice that 50% of the test still comprises questions that
are primarily a test of vocabulary. So a lot of effort will still have to be put in to improve vocabulary,
especially by those students who are non-native speakers of English. The only good thing now is that the
vocabulary will not be tested out of context as in the Analogies and Antonyms sections of the older GRE
test.
