e The layout of this book is in two main parts: the ‘‘understanding’’ of

13 unique mass transport properties and mechanisms of graphene-based

o membranes, and their ‘‘applications’’ in various filtration and separation

he technologies. The first two chapters briefly introduce the state-of-the-art

bli membrane-based separation and filtration processes, as well as the design,

P fabrication, and characterization of graphene-based membranes. The next
three chapters overview the unique mass transport properties and mech-
anisms of atomically thin graphene-based membranes, graphene oxide la-
mellar membranes and composite membranes containing graphene oxide
sheets.Inthefinalchapters,afewspecializedapplicationsofgrapheneand
othertwo-dimensionalmaterialbasedmembranesarecovered,i.e.barriers,
filtration and separation, as well as water desalination.
This book provides a representative example to explain the structure–
property–application relationship in materials science research using gra-
pheneinmembrane-basedmasstransportasanexample.Itcanserveasan
