Preface
This book is the result of serendipity – a most fortuitous series of
coincidences – and of a great deal of work on the part of the authors
and all project participants, advisors, and sponsors. It represents the
culmination of an International Development Research Centre (IDRC)
projectentitled‘BothSidesNow–CorporateSocialResponsibilityinthe
Latin American Extractives Industries: An Examination of Challenges
and Best Practice Opportunities.’ The objective of the Both Sides Now
project(2008–11)wastofostertheformationofanetworkofindividuals
withtheskills,competencies,andcommitmenttoexploretheemerging
dynamics of corporate social responsibility in the extractive industries
of Latin America from an interdisciplinary research perspective. The
research team gathered at a workshop held at Royal Roads University
inVictoria,BCinOctober2009.Thisbookpresentssomeofthepapers
presented at the workshop plus a number of additional works we felt
werenecessaryinordertoachieveourresearchobjectives.
At least on our part, the IDRC project and this book have been a
testament to Zen Master’s Shunryu Suzuki Roshi’s adage that ‘In the
beginner’smindtherearemanypossibilities.’Nowthattheprojectand
thebookhavebothbeensuccessfullybroughttoanend,weclosethese
endeavorswithSuzukiRoshi’swords:‘Everythingisperfect,butthereis
alotofroomforimprovement.’
