Introduction

The Gondi language of Adilabad District, Andhra Pradesh, India, is spoken by more than 2,00,000 people. The
Gonds, who call themselves Koytur and refer to their language as Koyang, have a rich cultural and linguistic heritage.
Despite the high level of lexical borrowing from state-recognized languages such as Hindi, Marathi and Telugu, one can
clearly see that Gondi is a distinct language with its own phonological patterns and grammatical structures.

A unique feature of this phrase book is that the phrases are presented in several languages with each written in
three scripts. This will enable learners to learn other languages and scripts through whichever language and script they
are most comfortable. An additional use for this book is for literate Gonds who wish to learn how to read and speak one
of the other four languages presented (Telugu, English, Hindi or Kolami).

Due to the complexities of language it is often difficult to obtain an exact word-for-word match when translating
phrases, so we have attempted to communicate the same meaning in each language, even whilst using different words.
There may be ways of improving our attempts, and hence we welcome constructive criticism in order to enhance the next
edition.

Our prayer and hope is that this Gondi Language Phrase Book will assist all those who are genuinely concerned
with preserving and developing the Gondi language and culture, and that these activities will go hand in hand with
development and modernisation within the region.

FOREWORD

The Gonds of Adilabad are inheritors of a splendidly rich cultural heritage. Language plays a vital role in
preserving the cultural heritage for posterity. The Adilabad variety of the Gondi language is spoken by nearly 2 lakh
Gonds. Though there is no official Gondi script as such, various attempts are underway to revive one of the native
Gondi scripts. Meanwhile, Gondi may be written in a variety of existing official scripts – as demonstrated in this
phrase book. In order to further develop and enrich the language, a Gondi Language Phrase Book has been a long felt
need. The present work has been a commendable effort to address this need.
This Gondi Language Phrase Book is very useful for learners of Gondi in helping them understand and address
the Gond’s problems easily. In addition it is useful to students who already know Gondi and are learning Telugu,
Hindi, English, or Kolami. They may access each language in whichever script they prefer.
It is encouraging to see that this second edition incorporates many more useful phrases, some basic
conversations, and grammatical drills to aid students as they embark on a journey of learning. I heartily congratulate
the compilers on their meticulous work and hope that it would be of immense use to the Gonds as well as other
connoisseurs of Gondi.
