GERMAN IDEALIST PHILOSOPHY
rudiger burner was bom in 1941 at Liidenscheid, Westphalia, in
Germany. He studied philosophy and classics at the universities of
Tubingen, Vienna, Heidelberg and Oxford, and became Professor of
Philosophy at Frankfurt in 1973 and at Tubingen in 1979. He is
currently Professor ofPhilosophy at the University ofHeidelberg, and
is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. His areas of
interest cover ancient philosophy, German idealism, hermeneutics,
social philosophy and aesthetics. Professor Bubner’s books include
Handlung, Sprache und Vemunft (1976; second edition, 1982), Geschichts-
prozesse und Handlungsnormen (1984) and Welche Rationalitat bekommt
der Gesellschaft? (1996), and in English he has written Modem German
Philosophy (1981), Essays in Hermeneutics and Critical Theory (1988) and
Innovations of German Idealism which is forthcoming.
