2008.ISC’3isacontinuationofalonglistofsuccessfulconferencesonvariousaspectsofsitecharacterization.
ThemostrecenteventsoftheseriescanbetracedbacktoISC-98(Atlanta,USA)andISC’2(Portal,Portugal).
TheideaofISCwasinitiatedbythetechnicalcommitteeonGroundPropertyCharacterizationbyIn-SituTests
(TC-16)oftheInternationalSocietyofSoilMechanicsandGeotechnicalEngineering(ISSMGE).
Aratherdiversegroupofpractitionersandresearchersfromallovertheworldhavegatheredintheconference
toexchangetheirexperiencesinallaspectsofgeotechnicalsitecharacterizationpracticeandresearch.Novel
ideas in the use and developments of sampling as well as in situ testing tools such as SPT, CPT, PMT and
DMTcontinuedtobethecoreoftheconference.PaperspresentedatISC’3revealedsomeoftheremarkable
developmentsingeophysicaltestingandimagingtechniquesthatenablenondestructiveprofilingofunderground
conditions.Ariseintheuseofriskmanagementandstatisticalanalysisingeotechnicalsitecharacterization
has also been noticed.Taiwan and some parts ofAsia are prone to natural hazards such as earthquakes and
typhoons.Asaconsequence,manypaperssubmittedfromthisregiondealswiththeseconcernsastheyrelateto
sitecharacterization.
Theconferenceproceedingshavebeenarrangedunderseventhemesincluding:Casehistoriesinfieldappli-
cations; Characterization of unusual/unsaturated geomaterials; Developments of new equipment & methods;
Geophysicaltesting&imagingtechniques;Interpretation/analysisoftestdata;Pavementgeomechanics;and
Samplingdisturbance.Atotalof207papersthatinclude13keynote/themelectureswerepresentedattheconfer-
ence.Inresponsetothecallofsavingtheplanetandreducingconsumptionofnaturalresources,thekeynote/theme
lecturepapersareincludedinasinglevolumeofprintedproceedings.AllpapersarestoreddigitallyinaCD.
TheconferencewouldnothavebeenpossiblewithoutthesupportofTC-16,membersofthevariousorga-
nizing/advisorycommitteesandtheoutstandingpaperssubmittedbytheauthors.FinancialsupportofISC’3
