Preface
The present book includes extended and revised versions of a set of selected papers
fromtheThirdInternationalConferenceonGeographicalInformationSystemsTheory,
Applications and Management (GISTAM 2017), held in Porto, Portugal, during
April 27–28.
GISTAM 2017 received 70 paper submissions from 34 countries, of which 24%
were included in this book. The papers were selected by the event chairs and their
selectionisbasedonanumberofcriteriathatincludetheclassificationsandcomments
providedbytheProgramCommitteemembers,thesessionchairs’assessment,andalso
the program chairs’ global view of all papers included in the technical program. The
authors of selected papers were then invited to submit a revised and extended version
of their papers having at least 30% innovative material.
The International Conference on Geographical Information Systems Theory,
Applications and Management aims at creating a meeting point of researchers and
practitioners to address new challenges in geo-spatial data sensing, observation, rep-
resentation, processing, visualization, sharing and managing, in all aspects concerning
both information communication and technologies (ICT) as well as management
informationsystemsandknowledge-basedsystems.Theconferencewelcomesoriginal
papers of either practical or theoretical nature, presenting research or applications, of
specializedorinterdisciplinarynature,addressinganyaspectofgeographicinformation
systems and technologies.
The papers selected to be included in this book contribute to the understanding of
relevant trends of current research on geographical information systems theory,
applications, and management, including: urban and regional planning, water infor-
mation systems, geospatial information and technologies, spatio-temporal database
management, decision support systems, energy information systems, and GPS and
location detection.
